Hail guts and gore....
Well if the headline is anything to go by then this film is all about guts, gore and glory, though Rambo is not after any of the three. Unlike the earlier films in this one Rambo is not the one man army though later on in the film he will take on and defeat a number of enemy troops to save the rest.
John Rambo another one to the list of films based on this character has Sylvester Stallone play the part to almost perfection and watching him through the film it’s hard to believe that this actor is 62 years old, him making an action film and starring in it at this stage is really worth watching as it hasn’t cut down on any of the effects of the earlier films.
Though I went into the film with the prior expectation of watching an actor past his prime doing an action sequence I now stand corrected with the powerhouse performance by Stallone.
In this film John Rambo is living a secluded life in the northern region of Thailand operating a long boat service on the Salween River. This film is somewhat based on real life circumstances of what is happening in Burma and the brutal oppression being faced by the peasants and farmers that live there. However watching this film just makes us wonder if Sly was actually into this entire theme, if so then he has really done his ground work well. Hats off to him.
Living a secluded life Rambo just can’t seem to get away from his past and trouble somehow has a knack for finding him, in the film a group of Christian missionaries approach him to take them to the Karen region to deliver aid to the inhabitants. From here on the entire story takes a twist with the missionaries being either killed or captured, its then that the head of the missionaries approaches Rambo to request for help as the embassies are unable to help and if so will be too late and he will have to lead a team of mercenaries that have been hired to do the extraction. However in the end Rambo ends up becoming part of the rescue operation and even winds up rescuing the mercenaries in the end.
John Rambo has Sly come full circle and finally come to terms with what he really is - a killing machine. The start of the film has actual real life footage of that region and the end is just a total killing (literally). Sly has done full justice to the character and it looks as though he was born for the part. Compared to his earlier film Rocky Balboa he has certainly toned his physique and got back into shape.
The film has kept dialogues to a minimum and is used only when necessary, its pure action right from start to finish with some really good likes like ‘live for nothing die for something’. This somehow just adds to the mounting anxiety and feel of the film. Besides this the excessive violence in this film is truly justified and it takes you back to old school action films from the 80’s.
On the whole this film is certainly not meant for the weak hearted and even those who are well suited for this will mostly have their eyes moistened not with the joy of the action but the ending shot which shows John Rambo returning home, in the same clothes he walked out in the first film to the track of Goldsmith’s ‘Coming Home’. Though it’s not as moving as the film Balboa it certainly will bring tears to your eyes. This film will certainly take you back to the First Blood days and is much better than the earlier Rambo sequences, in terms of action, feeling and visual effects. A must watch for die hard Rambo fans.
