2008 has begun and from jotting down entries for what worked and what didn't in the year gone by, we move on to what is expected from the months to follow. So here we kick start with 10 of the most anticipated soundtracks of year 2008, all in alphabetical order:
Alladin (Vishal-Shekhar)
Ever since Vishal-Shekhar made a mega impression with their soundtrack of Jhankaar Beats years back, they have been consistent with a mega hit album every year. In 2007, it was Om Shanti Om; and 2008 looks interesting too, with the composer-jodi reuniting with their Jhankaar Beats director Sujoy Ghosh. For this fantasy cum adventure light hearted entertainer set in the contemporary times, the composers promise to go whacky in a big way and come up with some of their most innovative work. If some of the songs composed with Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt as singers are any indications, followers of Vishal-Shekhar have some treat coming their way!
Chandni Chowk to China (Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Bappi Lahiri, Kailash Kher)
Director Nikhil Advani has never got it wrong when it comes to music of his films - Kal Ho Na Ho and Salaam-E-Ishq are a testimony to that. Producer Rohan Sippy was the first to go truly innovative with Bluffmaster where he came up with an original soundtrack that has an international appeal. Meanwhile composer trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have been enjoying a rocking time at the music stands for years now. When all of these come together for a film which stars Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone in the lead, it becomes an irresistible combo which has very less chances of failure. A title like Chandni Chowk to China with musical inputs by Bappi Lahiri and Kailash Kher only help the cause further.
Ghajini Remake (A.R. Rahman)
Ok, so no one knows till date about the eventual title of this film which is so far being referred to as 'Ghajini remake'. But naam mein kya rakha hai? Especially, when the project brings together professionals like Aamir Khan and A.R. Rahman. The original Tamil film 'Ghajini' had chartbuster tracks by Harris Jayaraj (who till date is known for his excellent score in Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein.) Though Rahman has stepped in for the Hindi version, no one has doubts around the eventual product that would be up for grabs this year.
God Tussi Great Ho (Sajid-Wajid)
No one, just about no one gave Partner much of a chance when it came to the music of the film. Well, all of that changed at two stages; first when the album met with a decent reception when showcased on the stands and later when the film became a mega hit and the music an overnight range. So why are we talking about Partner here? Because God Tussi Great Ho has the team of Sajid-Wajid composing for a Salman Khan starrer again and that too for the directorial debut of a man who has been behind writing numerous non-stop fun entertainers - Rumi Jaffrey. Yes, the film has been in the making for long but there are good expectations of the music of God Tussi Great Ho managing to hold on it's own.
Kambakth Ishq (Anu Malik)
If Sabir Khan's direction for the promotional music video of title song in end credit rolls of Heyy Babyy was any indication, the man certainly knows his craft and has a taste for some zany music! In his debut film as a director, Sabir has managed to get top notch actors like Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor on board. Of course, with a willing producer like Sajid Nadiadwala who has a tremendous success rate behind him (and some chartbuster soundtracks too), things only become easier. This is going to be yet another biggie starring Akshay that warrants a popular soundtrack.
Karzzzz (Himesh Reshammiya)
There are little doubts that the man with the cap won't hit gold with this one! One cannot ideally go wrong with the soundtrack for a film that boasts of a musical theme, has been adored for more than two decades and gives the actor/composer/singer a platform to go all out in creating and recreating the tunes. With backing of a willing music company which also produces the film, Karzzzz has all in it to bring together the off-screen and on-screen persona of Himesh Reshammiya and get an entertaining musical score running for the man's target audience. Chalo ek baar phir ho jaaye - 'Ek Haseena Thi'!
Krrazy 4 (Rajesh Roshan)
Rajesh Roshan creates blockbuster score every time he composes for his brother's film. With Krrazy 4, he is expected to bounce back in a big way with the songs for this riotous comedy that stars Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan, Rajpal Yadav and Suresh Menon as the Krrazy 4. Expect a whacky score from this entertainer that would have item songs featuring Hrithik Roshan and Rakhi Sawant.
Singh Is Kinng (Pritam)
Pritam has been the most successful composer of 2007. With the Welcome, Katrina Kaif and Akshay are turning out to be a dependable 'jodi'. And last but not the least; the film comes with Punjabi overtones, as conveyed through the film's title. Need we say more! Singh Is Kinng should be a kind of album that talks right from the top!
Tashan (Vishal-Shekhar)
The album has to live up it's name! When a film is called Tashan (which stands for 'Style'), it better have songs that spell 'tashan'! With Vishal-Shekhar at helm, one can feel confident of this happening as there have been number of instances when the composer duo has rose up to the occasion. Also, law of averages should be catching up with Yash Raj Films who haven't tasted success ever since the title song of Chak De India became an anthem. A cast like Akshay Kumar, Anil Kaooor, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor should only help the project further!
Yuvraaj (A.R. Rahman)
Mention of Yuvraaj may be coming at the very end due to alphabetical ordering but it sits right up there if one looks at anticipation quotient! Subhash Ghai and Rahman coming together is big enough news, especially since it will be after 9 long years that the two would be coming together after Taal (Kisna had Ismail Darbar sharing credits with Rahman). With the film's subject being musical, Gulzar saab writing lyrics, Shiamak Davar as the choreographer and actors like Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor and Katrina Kaif coming together, Yuvraaj is going to be magnum opus of 2008!
Alladin (Vishal-Shekhar)
