First weekend performance of latest release

In the Friday gone by, three distinct films had released - PHOONK (horror), MAAN GAYE MUGHALL-E-AZAM (comedy) and MUMBAI MERI JAAN (social). As pointed out in this very column last week, PHOONK was always the front runner and credit must go to the makers for having designed the strategy for the film's promotion and it's release quite well. Deserving 10 out of 10 for the way they brought PHOONK to the public, it was pretty much on the cards that PHOONK would take a good opening.

However, there was a surprise in store since being true to it's title, PHOONK seemed to have spun black magic at theaters across the country. Otherwise how does one really describe the terrific opening which this film managed to take all over the country? A near 100% opening on Friday caught even the staunchest supporter of Ram Gopal Varma (and PHOONK) by surprise.

Released at limited shows (2-4 at all major multiplexes), the film took a very good opening (over 80%) when the day begun and soon word of mouth ensured that by the time evening and night shows commenced, there were house full signs all over. Made in a budget of just 3 crores, the film is on it's way to do a business of at least 10 crores which means that the Superhit tag is not really far away.

A surprise success of the year in spite of no leading stars glaring from the film's posters and promos, PHOONK has managed to erase the disappointment of the box office failure of Ramu's last month release CONTRACT.

On the other hand both MAAN GAYE MUGHALL-E-AZAM and MUMBAI MERI JAAN had a tepid opening at the box office. Though the latter at the least managed to fetch good reviews, in fact the best of the season, the former was thrashed by audience as well as critics all over. Result was that MUMBAI MERI JAAN is showing some signs of survival and fighting hard at theaters on the basis of good word of mouth. However, MAAN GAYE MUGHALL-E-AZAM has been a complete downer, hence turning out to be yet another dismal show for a comedy film this year. At the very onset, it had seemed to be a safe film but audience had zero inclination towards watching this film which means that the way MGMEA has performed, it may well short of the collections of Mallika's last UGLY AUR PAGLI.

Last week's movies

Siddharth Anand's BACHNA AE HASEENO has turned out to be a safe preposition for everyone involved. Showing a good performance at the box office with more than 21 crores coming in it's first week, the film has reached safe shores and should comfortably cross the 30 crores mark, hence ensuring at the least an above-average tag for itself. Well, if one asks Yash Raj Films, they may well love to call it as a hit, at least thematically, since it has been after ages that their film has managed to win hearts of the audience. In Mumbai the film did business in excess of 4.5 crores while Delhi was good too at just a little less than 2 crores. Delhi NCR brought in another 1 crore plus while Ahmedabad too topped the 1 crore mark. In fact the way BACHNA AE HASEENO has performed, it is all set to outscore the final box office collections of TASHAN.

For a film which was clearly dated and didn't have an impressive publicity to boast of, GOD TUSSI GREAT HO went on to do some decent business for itself with a 11 crore first week. However, the film hasn't been much appreciated and is bound to take a big fall in the second week. At maximum, the film would be able to earn a coverage tag for itself, something which neither the makers nor the actors would mind since at one point of time, even that looked impossible. The film was best in Mumbai (in fact quite good) with 3.5 crores though Delhi was quite low at 75 lakhs.

From the past

Till a few days back, especially after a blockbuster first week opening, one wondered whether SINGH IS KINNG would go on to break the 86 crores record of OM SHANTI OM. However, after a second week haul of 18 crores, that is now out of question as the two week total of the film stands at 62 crores. Covering up remaining 24 crores is clearly an impossible task and for SINGH IS KINNG, now the immediate milestone is to cross the 76 crores WELCOME barrier. In it's second week, SINGH IS KINNG fell by 60% in collections (expected since the film had opened huge) though it continued to do well in places like Mumbai (2 crores), Delhi (2.5 crores) and Delhi NCR (1.25 crores) which brought in maximum moolah.

UGLY AUR PAGLI could muster only 10 lakhs in it's third week after a 80% fall and is now ready for it's DVD release after a 7.5 crores haul. However, it would still be some time before Aamir Khan eventually decides to bring JAANE TU YA JAANE NAA on home video. In the week leading to 50 days at the box office, this Imran Khan starrer earned another 40 lakhs at the box office. The film should eventually close under 55 crores.

In the future

Four films release this Friday - ROCK ON, C KKOMPANY, CHAMKU, MUKHBIIR - and frankly none of them seem to have hype or buzz good enough to do a PHOONK at the box office. While MUKHBIIR is a no-show even before it's first show unleashes on screen, there aren't much hopes from CHAMKU either in either cities or the cow belt (especially up North where traditionally Deol films have done well). One clear cut reason for that? It's extremely weak title! This leaves ROCK ON and C KKOMPANY to fight it out amongst themselves. While ROCK ON should open well (over 50%) in its target market of Mumbai and Delhi, C KKOMPANY has a more pan-India audience as it's target audience. However, anything over 50% for this medium budgeted comedy should be good enough for it to sail through.

A tussle has surfaced between the ace director Raj Kumar Santoshi and one of the most successful production houses PVR Pictures.

PVR Pictures has accused Santoshi of not keeping with a contract he had signed with the company and filed a petition in the Mumbai High Court.

The petition accuses the film maker of violating an exclusive Rs 60 crore deal for making two films for PVR.

The planned films were a romantic comedy called 'Backstreet Boyz' and a period film on the life of Emperor Ashoka.

Now that Santoshi has started the production of a film titled as 'Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani' with Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif in the lead roles, PVR is stating that the director cannot continue with the shooting as according to the agreed contract he cannot make any new films without wrapping up the work on the two films stated in the contract agreement.

There is also an accusation of the story of 'Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani' being very similar to that of 'Backstreet Boyz'.

Coming days will tell whether the case now in court will move on or whether the problem will be resolved quickly with an agreement of mutual understanding.

After playing a gullible village bumpkin in ‘Singh Is Kinng’ and taking us all on a laugh riot with his foolhardy acts, Akshay Kumar is back to basics as he turns macho in his upcoming flick ‘Blue’, a film that seems to be an answer to mega budget Hollywood action flicks.

Akki, the action king of Bollywood is a dear old loyalist of ‘desi’ action stunts. And the actor is in no mood to admit that the Indian film industry is far behind the Hollywood flicks in any way as far as action is concerned.

In a recent interview the actor was asked, ‘Is budget a constraint for Bollywood flicks, which refrains the films from coming at par with Hollywood action films?’

To which Akki retorted and said, " I don’t understand how we are in any way far behind Hollywood. My next flick Blue is an action film and it has some of the most amazing stunts. The entire film is made in the budget if Rs 70-75 crore. I wish that whoever feels that Hollywood is better because it invests big bucks on their action films must watch ‘Blue’ and see what understand that money is not a constraint for good cinema.”

So, what jaw dropping stunts would we be seeing Akki doing this time?

‘I have performed some of the most daring stunts this time round. From fighting with sharks to performing action scenes underwater, the film will surely be one of a kind" said Akki.

Well for now, we will just have to wait and watch!

Shah Rukh Khan and Sushmita Sen's chemistry set the screen on fire the last time they were paired opposite each other in Farah Khan's Main Hoon Na. That was a long time back, 2004 to be precise. Now the duo would once again be seen together in Viveck Vaswani's film Dulha Mil Gaya.

This film has been long in the making due to various reasons. However, Viveck had earlier announced right here that the film is now 90% complete. The makers are even eyeing a release sometime around January next year. The film, directed by Mudassar Aziz also stars Fardeen Khan in a prominent role. Dulha Mil Gaya, apart from a stellar cast, also has some beautiful scenes shot aboard a luxury liner and in the Carribean islands. So that's one more reason to check out this film when it opens across cinema halls early next year.

The film industry woke up to a big, big surprise on Friday. RGV's PHOONK started with a bang, taking one of the biggest starts in the recent times. The opening was in the 85% - 90% range across the nation, multiplexes and single screens included [at places, even 100%]. The distributors/exhibitors of various circuits this writer spoke to sounded elated. Given the fact that RGV has had a string of flops, no one expected PHOONK to open exceedingly well.

MAAN GAYE MUGHALL-E-AZAM had a dull start of 15% - 20% and the reports are not encouraging. MUMBAI MERI JAAN too started in the same range, but the silver lining is that the reports are unanimously good and the strong word of mouth should benefit the film.

Lara Dutta experienced a different way of leading life that she had till now only read, heard or seen in other movies.

The Bollywood babe on her way to the shooting location Pollachi in Tamilnadu might not have thought that portraying the character of a simple very poor village woman will turn out to be so difficult.

When director Priyadarshan saw Lara's selection of her character's outfits designed by noted designer Nita Lulla, he immediately rejected it as he felt that the costumes are too good, beautiful and glamorous to be used by the wife of a struggling barber in a remote village.

The director decided to buy all the required dresses for Lara of his own and he came back with very low cost cotton sarees.

Then began the 20 days long ordeal of enacting the extremely down to earth and rustic role of the wife of Billo Barber.

Lara Dutta was made by Priyadarshan to do everything from feeding the goats, to getting water from the well to blowing a chulha and to walk barefoot for a long time during the time of shooting.

It will be worth the wait to watch how well this actress has carried of the most different role in her career as till now she has been seen only in highly glamorous roles of urban modern girls.

PHOONK has taken a huge opening at the box office. With near 100% collections all over and continuing to go strong show after show, the film has given Ram Gopal Varma yet another success this year after SARKAR RAJ. Ramu talks:

"Any filmmaker primarily wants to make a film which people will acclaim. The collections are more the Producers and Distributors concern. But the collections also indicate how many people actually saw the film. Does one feel that the film has served the purpose because a few individuals like the Print & Television critics say it is good or is how many tickets audience bought? Without batting an eyelid even the most award savvy Director would say that it is the audience buying tickets which is important because it will at the end of the day it will be his primary objective to see that as many people as possible watches his work.

In the year Satya released “Godmother” got the National Award and Satya was completely ignored. Godmother ran for 2 weeks and Satya ran for 25 weeks in the same theatre and 10 year later Satya is remembered as a cult-film and the jury members of the National Award committee would have forgotten both Godmother and its Director; and worse they would not have been even bothered to follow that Director’s career.

I always knew that it is the audiences not the critic’s reviews which made Satya work so tremendous. They gave as much or better reviews for Maqbool, Khamosh Pani, etc and we all know their box-office fate. A prominent critic mentioned in his review when Raat released that time, that it is an unintended comedy. Apart from him most reviews too trashed it. 15 years later many critics of present times term it as a cult-classic. That’s not because Raat was ahead of times but the critics of today were just audience at that time and hence unbiased.

Anyway to cut a long story short, not to undermine “Mumbai Meri Jaan” or its maker who received raving reviews compared to “Phoonk”, I just would like him to answer sincerely from his heart whether he himself would have preferred glowing reviews and opinions from critics or the collections of “Phoonk”?"

Superstar Rajinikanth and the producers of 'Kuselan' have reportedly come forward to compensate the losses, paying heed to the demands of the Exhibitors who had acquired the release rights of the film.

Reports indicate they have come to a decision to compensate Rs. Seven Crores, which would be divided among the Exhibitors based on the amount they had paid to bag the theatrical rights of 'Kuselan'.

Meanwhile, in order to compensate the loss faced by the Master Distributor Pyramid Saimira, it is said that Rajini would act in a movie to be produced by them once Rajini completes 'Robot'.

However, this gesture has not been found reasonable by the Exhibitors' Association. The Association had a meeting after all these developments and came out with decisions regarding the unpleasant tussle. They want more money back as the Minimum Guarantee (MG) amount they had paid out was enormous.

The Secretary of the Exhibitors' Association Pannerselvam stated that if the loss is not compensated they would be forced to boycott the future films involving all those concerned.

Meanwhile, a few Exhibitors from Karnataka are presently in Chennai to meet the producers of 'Kuselan' and Rajinikanth to ask for compensation as the movie has reportedly not done well in that state as well.

First International Malayalam film `Aakasha Gopuram`, released nationwide on Friday.

The film is an adaptation of the Henrik Ibsen classic play `The Master Builder`, which was first published in 1892 and first performed in Berlin on January 19, 1893.

Tutu J Sharma, Taizoon Khorakiwala and Manu S Kumaran produced the film while National award winning director K P Kumaran directed it.

The film stars Mohanlal, (the late) Bharat Gopi, Shweta Menon and Nithya.

Speaking to the media Kumaran said it was impossible to change the original text however he has interpreted it in his own way.

“It`s such a text that you can`t change it. I have certain suggestions or certain interpretations. I have been keeping the play intact and I have been breaking the play at several places, besides this I have been adding my own ideas into it. The play is intact but it`s not a play nor is it a transitional play it is a pure film. I have been throwing all these scenes on it through vast locations,” said Kumaran.

The film is making news outside its home territory for several reasons, one being that it is an adaptation of Henrik Ibsen`s famous play `The Master Builder`. Second it has assembled the best of talent from Hollywood, United Kingdom, Tamil and Malayalam film industries.

Multiple Emmy Award winner John Altman has given the music of the film. Altman has the credit of giving the music of the films like `Golden Eye`, `Titanic`, `Bhaji on the Beach` and `Shall We Dance`.

Altman admitted that the film `Aakasha Gopuram` has different music.

“I think they wanted (the producers of this film) the sort of sensibility which I had in the films `Titanic` and `Shall we dance`. The sorts of scoring that I was doing in those movies which people are familiar in here (in India). So I think it won`t be as big shock as some people thought it will be but yes it has a different approach,” said Altman.

Other international names associated with the film include Nigel Holland (`Batman Begins`, `Braveheart` and `Resident Evil` fame), who is the man behind Aakasha Gopuram`s sound design.

Rerecording mixers are Robert Farr (`Star Wars: Episode II` and `Episode III` and `Gangs of New York` fame) and Matthew Gough (`Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban` and `Cold Mountain` fame).

Visual effects are by John Harvey and Jonathan Trussler of `Kingdom of Heaven` fame.

The film is shot entirely in the United Kingdom by cinematographer Santosh C Thundiyil, who has made a name with films like `Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai`, `Pinjar` and `Kaal`.

The film Aakasha Gopuram is set in London among the Indian immigrant community and tells the story of Albert Samson (Mohanlal), a middle-aged architect, who has clawed his way to prominence.

His single-minded focus on his job, however, has hardened him and prevented him and his wife Alice (Swetha Menon) from having a meaningful private life.

Mohanlal spoke about his role in detail.

“My association with three ladies (actress in the film) is very strange in the film. This character (Mohanlal`s character in the film) has got very strange ideas because he loves to make things very big, he is renowned architect so it`s a passion and it`s a creation. So this man lives in a different plane, so he reacts with these ladies in different planes,” said Mohanlal.

Known for his deep commitment to female empowerment through his films K P Kumaran in `Aakasha Gopuram` paints an intriguing portrait of one man`s consuming desire for success.

First weekend performance of latest release

YASH RAJ FILMS finally have a success in their hands. After four back to back flops. After four back to back flops (LAAGA CHUNARI MEIN DAAG, AAJA NACHLE, TASHAN, THODA PYAAR THODA MAGIC) which boasted of big names like Rani Mukherjee, Abhishek Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit, Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Anil Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan, a film like BACHNA AE HASEENO with one film old Ranbir Kapoor has taken a good start at the box office. Of course presence of Bipasha Basu and Deepika Padukone is a big factor too with Siddharth Anand at the helm of affairs counting as well.

Considering the fact that SINGH IS KINNG had released just a week back and created a box office opening record, there were fears about BAH being eclipsed. However, that didn't quite happen as the film took an opening of over 70% which easily makes the film a safe preposition for everyone involved. With no big releases till the end of September, BACHNA AE HASEENO should bring smiles back in YRF camp!

GOD TUSSI GREAT HO, as expected, took an OK opening though a little better than expected. Salman Khan proved his prowess once again in the smaller center which meant that opening weekend was better than decent. A 50%-60% opening means that at the least this Rumi Jaffrey directed film has been face saving for everyone involved. Though in urban centers it is still movies like SIK and BAH that are holding center stage, there is a market in single screens which is happy with GTGH. The film is still on shaky grounds though considering there are 3 to 5 releases every week for next 6 weeks that should eat into it's business. Still, from a film which was thought to be a flop even before it's release has managed to recover a good amount of it's investment which means that losses, if any, would be minimal.

Last week's movies

http://www.masala.com/images/tmp/full/singhsnoop_full.jpg
SINGH IS KINNG is now the biggest ever Bollywood opener of all times. The film has broken the record of OM SHANTI OM which was created last Diwali and has collected close to 44 crores at the box office. Released at close to 1000 cinemas, the film has made records at number of centers. While Mumbai has surpassed the 7 crores barrier, Delhi has crossed 5 crores. Ahmedabad too came close to 2 crores, Jaipur, Hyderabad and Kolkata topped 1 crores while Delhi NCR is tremendous with 4 crores plus. In fact Gurgaon for the first time crossed 1 crores and was just below the 1.5 crore mark.

The film would obviously show a drop in it's second week but that would strictly be in terms of percentage which is expected considering huge collections in the first week. In terms of sheer money inflow, it should still come close to 20 crores which means that a week later, this Anees Bazmee film should top the business (75 crores plus) of WELCOME. It now has to be seen whether SINGH IS KINNG should eventually go on to break the record breaking 86 crores total of OM SHANTI OM. Considering the fact that BACHNA AE HASEENO has been doing good business and there are 3-5 releases every week, it does look quite difficult at this point!

What happened to GOOD LUCK in the meanwhile? Well, a 25 cinemas release and 3 lakhs coming from the entire country pretty much tells the tale, isn't it? Disaster!

From the past

As expected, UGLY AUR PAGLI took a massive fall (over 90%) in it's second week. The film was truly eclipsed by SINGH IS KINNG and could gather only 50 lakhs more. At 7.5 crores the film is coverage at some centers but that's about it. Also, at places where it hasn't managed to make any profits for the distributors, it hasn't been a loss making preposition either. In nutshell, a film which has been a come today - gone tomorrow affair. Of course, it would have done a little better if not for the competition surrounding it's release.

Both MISSION ISTANBUL and MONEY HAI TO HONEY HAI ran completely out of steam in their third week and between them only gathered 10 lakhs more. Two more disasters served by Bollywood in 2008! Meanwhile KISMAT KONNECTION continued it's trend of huge drops after a rollicking first weekend and saw close to 85% fall. With just 25 lakhs more coming in and it's total standing at 27.5 crores after 4 weeks, it's time for the DVD release of this average box office earner.

This means that the only film which still managed to stand tall over the week gone by was JAANE TU YA JAANE NAA which managed yet another crore to it's name. Though the fall was pretty apparent (60%), the collections were still good considering all other films were falling like nine pins in the wake of the success of SINGH IS KINNG. At 54 crores, the film has been a massive earner.

In the future

Three films release this Friday - PHOONK, MAAN GAYE MUGHALL-E-AZAM and MUMBAI MERI JAAN. Out of the three, PHOONK should take the best opening considering it's promotion being pretty much on par with Ram Gopal Varma's SARKAR RAJ. Pretty much boasting of on-your-face publicity with some excellent promos, this film comes at the time when mindless entertainers, comedies and feel good romantic films are doing the best business. For the set of audience looking at a unique thriller in the offering, PHOONK comes as a 'scary' relief.

MAAN GAYE MUGHALL-E-AZAM too should be safe since Mallika, Paresh Rawal and Rahul Bose are expected to bring in audience for this comic fare. An opening of 50% + should be good enough. Meanwhile MUMBAI MERI JAAN, though backed by critics and industry insiders who have seen the film in special screenings, may not really be able to do an AAMIR due to heavy inflow of movies starting this week. It should do well on home video though.

After Singh is Kinng, reports say that Akshay Kumar is being offered Rs 70 crore for a new project.

Akshay Kumar seems to be ruling over the box office as he skips the Rs 10 to Rs 20 crore fee bracket.

For almost two decades the Khans have ruled over Bollywood's box-office. Shah Rukh, Salman and Aamir started the trend of being paid in crores. It was only Hrithik Roshan, who could challenge the Khans clout for a short period after his debut in 2000.

However, now Akshay Kumar, who has been reinventing himself over the past few years, is emerging as the clear box office king.

Akshay has left the Khans and Hrithik Roshan way behind when it comes to acting remunerations. UTV Motion Pictures has reportedly signed Akshay Kumar for a jaw-dropping figure of Rs 72 crore for a new project.

“I can’t go into figures, but yes, I can say that we have signed Akshay Kumar for a film that will go on floors in the second half of 2009,” says Founder UTV Rampage, Ram Mirchandani.

His last release Singh is Kinng has earned a record Rs 90 crore over the first week and is set to cross Om Shanti Om's highest collection of Rs 167crore in worldwide ticket sales.

With a number of films such as Om Shanti Om, Welcome, Chak De India and Dhoom 2 having earned over a Rs 100 crore just at the box-office, the Bollywood revenue pie is getting bigger, and with expanding international markets the revenue projections might just make Akshay's new fee worth the while.

It seems that Bollywood is now following a simple rule by investing more because bigger the investment more the returns.

Meanwhile, the topmost position might go from Shah Rukh to Akshay to someone else in the future. But, the bottom line is if the actors are charging more money, producers are making much more and the industry is growing. And at the end of the day, that is all that matters.

BEDTIME STORIES

In a single night with FHM, Vidya Balan strips away her squeaky clean, pristine image and reveals jaw-dropping, shocking secrets about herself which she's never told anyone else before...

On breakfast in bed...

Says Vidya, "If a guy had to make me breakfast in bed, I'd eat whatever he makes well. I need maybe waffles, pancakes with lots of maple syrup, [licking her lips] something sugary and sweet – which is something I don't eat as I normally have boring fruit and some muesli."

On men...

"I get attention from men per say and I do flirt back with those I feel like giving attention to. Most of the men I meet try to woo me. For a man to woo me, he needs to be charming, has to have an edge about him and be someone who can have a conversation with me. He has to make me feel special from the instant we meet. I'd like him to maybe throw corny pickup lines at me and pamper me silly – chocolates, flowers and little gifts are always welcome. Make the most routine things special – you know, ask me how my day was. I'd love to stay in bed all day with him and we'd just talk to each other."

On singing in the shower...

"I'm someone who's singing all the time. Sometimes, I'll just switch on the music while having a shower and sing along. I like to leave the door ajar so I can hear the music...I'd love it if a man sang to me Billy Joel's She's Always A Woman To Me. That's also my ringtone. It describes every woman perfectly."

On her link-up with Shahid Kapoor...

"He's my co-star and we get along really well, but that's it. So, all the women reading this can be happy and can continue having their crush on him. To date someone a couple of years older or younger is okay, but nobody over forty! I don't want a father figure. I'm someone who definitely endorses the institution of marriage. I would like to have kids some day. I'm a very passionate person. Whoever gets married to me will be a happy man... let's leave it at that."

Veteran actor Manoj Kumar who felt insulted at being caricatured in last year's blockbuster Om Shanti Om and not satisfied with an apology from Shah Rukh Khan has now filed a case against the telecast of the film on television.

And that's not all. There is another lawsuit against the film and this time from a script writer alleging plagiarism.

Manoj Kumar is upset that Shah Rukh Khan has not kept his promise to delete scenes in which he was caricatured.

Shah Rukh's Red Chillies Entertainment produced the film which was one of last year's biggest hits.

Joining Manoj Kumar in the battle against Om Shanti Om is scriptwriter Ajay Monga. On Wednesday, Monga also moved the Bombay High Court saying that OSO was partly based on a script he wrote three years ago.

A script he claims is registered with the film writers' association in 2005.

Monga claims Red Chillies promised to pay him Rs 1.25 crore but later back tracked. Red Chillies was not available for comment.

It seems like a wake up call for Shah Rukh Khan but Monga says this is a wake up call for the entire industry where over the years original work has given way to plagiarism. Something he says which has to stop.

Singh is Kinng, starring Akshay Kumar in the lead role, opened to an excellent box office worldwide today but critics are not sure whether the euphoria will last.

The film's producer Vipul Shah said that box office collections on the opening day was a "historical 100 per cent" everywhere. "It is the biggest ever opening for any film so far," he claimed.

Singh is Kinng has been released in 1800 screens worldwide, he added.

When asked about the weekend and second week prospects for the film, Shah replied, "they look record breaking."

Sandeep Bhargava of Indian Films which has the distributed the film worldwide, said according to distributors in India and overseas, the film has got a phenomenal initial opening.

"They say the opening is bigger than Shah Rukh Khan starrer Om Shanti Om. "However, it is too early to provide the comparative figures as the film has been released only today," he added.

The much hyped and well published movie which is co-produced by Akshay Kumar himself was in the news all throughout its making.

The actor's recent movies have raked over Rs 500 crore and trade circles commented that the film's
title suggested Kumar's attempt to replace Shah Rukh Khan as the 'King of Bollywood'.

However, critics and trade analysts are divided on their opinion about the film's fate at the box office.

Some critics are keeping their fingers crossed and feel that the euphoria will not last in the second week.

"Reports about the film's content are mixed. With good publicity and hype, half the battle is won. But, I am not sure if the film will do well at the box office.

The collections are sure to drop from Monday," trade analyst Amod Mehra said. According to Mehra, the script is not exciting enough to sustain through the second week with competition coming from Ranbir Kapoor starrer Bachna Aae Haseeno and Salman Khan's God Tussi Great ho both releasing on August 15.

Meanwhile, another trade analyst Taran Adarsh described the film as a good entertainer.

"Audience should not apply any logic to the film. Just enjoy it. It is fantastic. Singh is Kinng is made on a lavish scale and will re-write box office history."

He said even though the film has its share of flaws and turn of events are not captivating at times, the proceedings move so fast and packs in so much, that there is no time to think and analyse.

Taran said despite the upcoming releases in the weeks to come, Singh is Kinng is set to rule the hearts of audiences, as it is their verdict which matters the most.

Senior film journalist and critic Ajay Brahmatmaj described the film as "completion of director Anees Bazmee's nonsense trilogy -- No Entry, Welcome and now Singh is Kinng. We hope he makes some sensible films in future," he said but admitted that the box office opening of the film has been landmark.

"The good chemistry between Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif continues in this film as well. However, the fact is that script is always the king," he added.

Just a word of caution before you watch this film: SINGH IS KINNG is not for the intellectuals or those pretending to be one. It's not for the hard-nosed critics either.

Now read on…

Vipul Shah. Anees Bazmee. Akshay Kumar. Katrina Kaif. Four names for whom success has become a habit. That makes SINGH IS KINNG the most awaited movie of the season. Must add, the wait was worth it!

You know the rules when you watch a hardcore entertainer: Just don't look for logic. If you do, too bad for you, for you would never enjoy a film of this genre and more specifically, SINGH IS KINNG.

Anees Bazmee's films are very high on entertainment. The plotline may be paper-thin, perhaps ludicrous and farcical, but when did Bazmee ever promise a SCHINDLER'S LIST or a SAVING PRIVATE RYAN? SINGH IS KINNG works because it delivers what it promises: Full on entertainment!

Bazmee has the knack of making immensely watchable fares that cater to the aam junta. SINGH IS KINNG isn't a laughathon in entirety. Comedy, romance, action and drama, everything is well synchronised in those 2.10 hours here.

But, wait, SINGH IS KINNG isn't a foolproof product. It has its share of flaws, the turn of events aren't captivating at times, but SINGH IS KINNG moves so fast and packs in so much, there's no time to think or analyze.

The final word? SINGH IS KINNG is a delicious and scrumptious pav-bhaji served in the finest cutlery. Your taste buds are sure to relish it... and ask for more!

Lakhan Singh aka Lucky [Sonu Sood] is the King of the Australian underworld, accompanied by his associates [played by Javed Jaffrey, Neha Dhupia, Manoj Pahwa, Yashpal Sharma, Kamal Chopra and Sudhanshu Pande]. Far away, in a small village in Punjab, where Lucky was born, there exists someone more notorious than him - Happy Singh [Akshay Kumar].

The village is fed up of Happy's magnanimity, which has resulted in a number of hilariously disastrous situations. Out of desperation, they decide to send him on a long trip [that will keep him out of the village for a while!] to bring Lucky back to Punjab, as his despicable deeds were maligning their image in Australia.

The happy-go-lucky bumpkin, taking his mission a bit too seriously, embarks on his journey, accompanied by his friend, Rangeela [Om Puri], who hates Happy for dragging him into it.

The high point of his journey is his chance meeting with Sonia [Katrina Kaif], with whom he falls in love, but upon reaching his destination, things take a precarious turn as he runs into a series of comic misadventures, leaving him penniless. He is fortunate to find warmth and affection in an elderly lady [Kirron Kher].

In a strange turn of events, an attempt on Lucky's life is foiled by a well-intentioned Happy, who fights off the attackers by risking his own life. Following the altercation, Lucky lands up in hospital paralyzed and Happy, unexpectedly, finds the tables turned on him when he is expected to assume the role of the new King.

Few minutes into the film and you know that SINGH IS KINNG is a lavish spectacle that's high on entertainment. Sonu Sood chasing a gora assassin at the very start or minutes later, Akshay chasing a hen - SINGH IS KINNG starts with gusto.

And Bazmee doesn't let you wear your thinking caps all through the first hour. From India to Egypt to Australia, from the comforts of his home in Punjab, to the humble abode of a woman selling flowers in Sydney [Kirron Kher], SINGH IS KINNG involves you in the journey.

And then Akshay becomes the King. Oh, how he becomes the King is equally hilarious. The sequence at the hospital [Sonu Sood is diagnosed with a weird disorder] is simply hilarious. There's a twist in the tale at the intermission point and the second hour, therefore, shifts gears - it changes from kabhi funny, kabhi drama to a prem kahani.

It's smooth sailing till there's another twist towards the pre-climax [wouldn't like to reveal it, since it would act as a spoiler]. But, frankly, the film could've done without this track. The narrative, thankfully, is back on tracks soon after.

Anees Bazmee has a flair for writing great entertainers that work big time with the masala-loving junta. If you've loved NO ENTRY and WELCOME, you'd love SINGH IS KINNG too. This time, Bazmee shares the writing credits with Suresh Nair and the duo come up with some real wacky episodes. In terms of production design, this is Bazmee's most lavish fare so far. It's a grandiose product.

Pritam's music is already popular and it compliments the goings-on completely. 'Bhootni Ke', 'Jee Karda' and the title track stand out, while 'Teri Ore' is easy on the nerves. Ben Nott and Sanjay Gupta's cinematography is top notch.

Akshay Kumar takes rapid strides with SINGH IS KINNG. Sure, you've seen him in comic fares time and again and perhaps, there might be a doubt, Will he carry it off yet again? Oh yes, he does! There's no saturation point as far as this actor is concerned. He holds your attention in every sequence, irrespective of how strong the scene is, and that's the biggest compliment for any actor. SINGH IS KINNG without Akki is like an ocean without marine life. Akshay rules!

The camera loves Katrina Kaif and it shows in SINGH IS KINNG too. She looks bewitching and enacts her part with tremendous confidence. Kirron Kher is superb and so is Om Puri. Terrific performances! They compliment Akki so well. Ranvir Shorey is first-rate. Sonu Sood is another actor who's finally getting his due in Hindi films. Javed Jaffrey's character works big time till he does a somersault in the pre-climax. Neha Dhupia is engaging. The nok-jhonk between Sudhanshu Pandey and Yashpal Sharma is perfect. Manoj Pahwa is good.

On the whole, SINGH IS KINNG lives up to the hype and hoopla. Want a joyride without taxing your brains? Board the SINGH IS KINNG wagon. At the box-office, the film will fetch a hurricane-like start. The paid previews, the opening weekend, the first week business, everything will be record-shattering. Notwithstanding the new oppositions in the weeks to come, SINGH IS KINNG will rule the hearts of the aam junta [whose verdict matters the most] as also the box-office, proving a record holder in the final tally. Blockbuster Hit!

According to the TAM ratings for the week starting July 21, 'Colors', the GEC from the Viacom 18 stable, notched up viewership ratings of 81 GRPs in the very first week of its launch, making it a clear number three among the general entertainment channels behind only Star Plus and Zee TV with viewership ratings of 258 GRPs and 180 GRPs respectively and ahead of Sony Entertainment network and NDTV Imagine which notched viewership ratings of 72 GRPs and 71 GRPs respectively.

Channel sources said 'Colors' achieved a viewership level of 36.4 million viewers with just five-and-a-half days of programming.

''The numbers for 'Colors' are an all time high for any new GEC channel as these numbers are almost four times that of 9X's and nearly 50 per cent more than NDTV Imagine's opening numbers,''the sources said. When compared to viewership ratings of 81 GRPs notched by 'Colors' in its opening week, 9X and NDTV Imagine had garnered ratings of 21 GRPs and 56 GRPs in the opening week of their launch.

Comparing the numbers on a like-to-like basis(July 21 1900 hrs to July 26), places 'Colors' as the clear number three above Sony, NDTV Imagine and the rest, the sources added.

The sources attribute the huge viewership levels for the channel in large part to the adventure reality show 'Fear factor Khatron Ke Khiladi' hosted by Bollywood 'Khiladi' Akshay Kumar.

The show, which marks the debut of Akshay on the small screen, close on the heels of his contemporaries like Shahrukh Khan in 'Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain' and Salman Khan on 'Dus Ka Dum', notched up average viewership ratings of 2 TVRs with the peak ratings being 2.3 TVRs during its opening week.

Being aired on the new GRC Mondays to Thursdays at 2200 hrs, 'Fear Factor Khatron Ke Khiladi' has Akshay Kumar, among the most dependable stars of the film industry today, display his daredevilry and penchant for adventure and thrill as the host of the new show, guiding 13 Bollywood beauties in performing some of the most breathtaking stunts ever performed.

Shot in the exotic locales of South Africa, Fear Factor Khatron Ke Khiladi shows beauties like Yaana Gupta, Aditi Govtrikar, Pooja Bedi, Sonali Kulkarni, Anita Hasnandani, Meghna Naidu, Tapur Chatterjee, Tupur Cahtterjee, Nethra Raghuraman, Anjana Sukhani, Dipannita Sharma, Vidya Malvade and Urvashi Sharma performing some death-defying stunts in the exotic locales of South Africa in pursuit of the battle of physical and mental strength to determine as to who among them will be the last one standing .

Witnessing beautiful women perform stunts that would seem near impossible for ordinary mortals takes the game to the highest level of physical and mental challenge, making the show more gritty and edgy than ever before.

Among the other shows on the channel, 'Balika Vadhu' averaged 0.9 TVR for the week with a peak rating of 1.2 TVR, 'Jai Shri Krishna' averaged 0.8 TVR with a Peak rating of 0.9 TVR.

Noting that the ratings and reach of the programmes has been increasing steadily ever since its launch on July 21 at 1900 hrs, channel sources said,''this indicates that viewers are continuously sampling the channel.'' While 'Fear Factor Khatron Ke Khiladi' is the flagship show for the new channel, also included in the programme line-up is a fantasy drama Rahe Tera Ashirwaad, a sublime saga of deep devotion which witnesses an orphaned girl blessed by Jai Mata Vaishnodevi fighting forces of evil; Jai Shri Krishna, an epic show capturing Lord Krishnas childhood glory; a gripping new drama Balika Vadhu a first ever on Indian television enlightening the social evil of child marriage, presenting the journey of a bride in Bandhan Saat Janamon Ka; a romantic tale of love that triumph against all odds in Jeevan Saathi and evoking patriotism in the period drama of Mohe Rang De.

Monty Sharma, the composer who made it big with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Saawariya", has joined the league of successful music directors and is scoring music for 21 films.

"I'm composing for as many as 21 films - some will release this year and some will come out next year," Monty told IANS.

Monty, who is also judging the reality show "Voice Of India", added: "My days are really hectic as I have to do my regular work and judge the show. But, I have planned my days - five days for my work, one day for 'Voice of India' and one day for my wife."

Talking about the success of "Saawariya", he said: "Though 'Saawariya' gave me the fame and identity, I was working in the industry since a long time. After 'Saawariya', I have gained recognition and people have started taking me seriously. 'Saawariya' made a lot of difference in my life."

Trained under his grandfather Ram Prasad Sharma, Monty started working in the industry from the age of 15 as a keyboard player. His first film as a keyboard player was "Mr. India" under the legendary music director duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

"Music is in my blood as I come from a family of musicians. Pyarelalji is my uncle (father's elder brother). My father Anand Sharma was one of the best viola players of his times. My other uncle Gorukh Sharma was one of the best guitarists who played for most of the films including the famous track of 'Aashiqui'."

In spite of coming from a family of musicians, Monty's entry into Bollywood has not been easy. He had to wait for almost 20 years to get his first big break.

The 37-year-old composer has worked in various capacities in the music industry. From key board player to music arrangements, to background score, he has experienced every trait of the trade.

"I started as a key board player and then gradually shifted to music arrangements. I did the first arrangement for 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' and many other films followed later. I started background score with 'Shatranj', which starred Divya Bharati and went on to do the background score for many films including 'Black' and finally Sanjay chose me for 'Saawariya'."

"But the first composition that I did was for Sanjay's 'Bajirao Mastani', which was later shelved."

Monty wants to use new singers for his films and says there are a lot of talents which need to the tapped.

"The reality shows have introduced a huge number of talents. There are 800 films being made in Bollywood, so I think there is an ample scope for all of them."

Everyone was eagerly awaiting the arrival of ‘The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’ since its news started surfacing, especially after learning about legendary action star Jet Li’s participation in it. Recently, film distributors of ‘The Mummy 3’ decided to defer its release in Tamil Nadu as its worldwide release coincided with the release of ‘Kuselan’ – August 1, 2008. Now, ‘The Mummy 3’ will release on August 8, 2008 in Tamil Nadu alone while it releases on its official worldwide release date elsewhere in India.

Rajni is an unstoppable phenomenon to which anyone gets attracted, even if he or she does not want to. Rajni’s films are massive crowd-pullers. When a Rajni movie releases in India, it draws all filmgoers, leaving other theatres empty. The effect is drastic on other films releasing at the same time. This is the reason filmmakers and distributors avoid releasing their films around the release date of a Rajni movie.

Earlier, Shahrukh Khan called up Rajinikanth and requested him to postpone the release of ‘Kuselan’s dubbed version in Hindi after Diwali. The reason? Shahrukh is starring in ‘Billo Barber’ – Priyadarshan’s Hindi remake of ‘Katha Parayumbol’ – which releases on Diwali and he does not want this film to pit against Rajni’s Kuselan.

So, it is not just Bollywood that fear Rajni’s power; Hollywood too gets its share of nightmares when it comes to competing with this Emperor of the filmdom!

The hot vibes between Salman and Shahrukh is an open secret. Media had made it a hot topic of discussion. Salman does not leave any opportunity to throw tantrums on Shahrukh. Though he has not directly referred Shahrukh as dog, but his recent comment on the blog is a clear indication the person he referred to is none other than Shahrukh.

Salman wrote, “For the next few days you will hear and read a lot of shit about me, a lot of it. Keep on reading it…but don’t react to it. I don't. Like sometimes when you are traveling in a fast car and you find a dog chasing your car…barking away. You don’t stop the car and start reacting to the dog…u don’t…there’s no point. I don’t wish to react. I don’t have the time for it. Besides, I don’t understand the language of dogs, except for my two - Myson and Myjaan.

In reference to Paanchvi Paas failure, Salman said, “Unfortunately in our industry the developing trend is not to celebrate others success…every time another person is successful there will be someone trying to pull him down. You don’t increase your own efforts to become successful but try to always decrease someone else’s success…that’s the mantra of the industry. A man is good they say but they say it in the past tense. A lot of people out there talk highly but only once a person’s gone…Dead! These people whoever they are - are just doing their job - only what they know to do best. I chose to remain silent. I do not have the time to spend reacting. But even silence speaks. Silence makes more noise than thunder. …’Bandar Sher ko chidhata hai….’ Sirf aawaaz kar sakta hai... Kabhi Sher ko maar sakta hai? The industry’s arguably most bankable star Akshay Kumar held court at a press conference of “ Singh is Kinng” at the Hilton Hotel here on July 25 organized by its distributors Studio 16 and producers Adlabs Films Ltd.

The conference opened with Kumar denying the suggestion that the title of the movie implied that it was targeted towards Punjabis. Pointing to the cross on a chain on his neck he said “Look I am wearing a cross – but I am a Punjabi. I believe in everything.” He explained the message he wished to convey in this movie is that anybody with a positive attitude can become a ‘King’ too. He added that it was not money or power which made one happy but how one dealt with life. In a world filled with negatives when all one sees or reads about is murder, rape, war etc he said he hoped his “small” film would cheer and inspire audiences to develop , in his words “positivity” to face life with grace and joy.

The film took seed while after a shooting for “Bhool Bhuliya” when Akshay Kumar found himself driving behind a truck with the message “Singh is King” displayed at its rear. The banner stuck in his head. Flashing his lights for clearance to overtake, the driver, a Sardar gave way and when being passed he gave Kumar such a cheerful greeting with a beaming smile that he was struck by the ordinary driver’s positive attitude. Even being in what was obviously a very difficult profession and circumstances. On getting home he immediately called his producer Vipul Shah and told him he had to make a movie with this name and with the positive personality of the truck driver he had encountered. He hopes this becomes a landmark film as it is his first home production.

In defense of the knowledge of English of the driver the “King” on the back of the truck was correctly spelt with a single “n” and Kumar clarified it was for numerological considerations that Vipul Shah had added an extra “n” to make it “Kinng” as he had done in his production “ Namastey London “ when the “Y” was added at the end for the same reason.

He said it includes both comedy and action. He reminded audiences it was far more difficult to pull off comedy than the action scenes which he said are “easy.” But he made it clear in “Kinng” the action is of the humorous variety which anyone from a child to a grandparent would enjoy. He said that he has come to abhor violence and brutality and prefers to gift fans with light hearted fare which was worth spending their money on rather than grim, serious stuff or loads of bloodshed and carnage. At the same time he clarified that he would not refuse serious roles outright, citing his performance in the thriller “Eight By Ten” under production.

Referring to his role in “Kinng” the still boyish looking actor said it was one for which needed no preparation whatsoever as his character “Happy Singh” is a reflection of his own positive philosophy. “The role just flowed “he added “because it is me.”

Katrina Kaif is a “perfect ‘ producer’s actress” complimented Akshay Kumar about his co-star in the film. He recalled she had arrived in India with just stars in her eyes without knowing a single word – even “shukriya” in Hindi. “That she had learned the language as also Urdu so quickly and efficiently speaks volumes of her professionalism and dedication he added. “She’s huge now” he gushes pointing out she has delivered 5 back to back hits, matched by very very few in the history of Bollywood.

When asked about his meeting with Sylvester Stallone recently who plays a part in a movie Kumar is shooting, he indulged in a brief flash back when he reminisced about his humble beginnings as a waiter. At his workplace he had a poster of Stallone, because he wanted to be macho like him and another of Sreedevi because he hoped to have a girlfriend like her one day. At that time he said it had been just a dream and now, what more could he ask for life when he had already lived that dream by having been able to work with and gain the friendship of both his idols?

“Globalization is very big for me” stated Akshay Kumar and in this context he felt he was entering into production at the most opportune time. Bollywood he said is fast gaining ground worldwide and international audiences have started realizing that it is not just about singing songs and running around trees. Just a couple of years ago he remarked that releases were made with around 800 prints , but today it had touched 2000 and he predicts this would explode to 4000 by 2010.

The secret he attributes for his success seems much too oversimplified but something the “Kinng” deeply believes works for him. For one thing he starts every project with “ Om,” – his father’s name and the other , he touches the feet of his parents and then he goes to work and lets their magic blessings do the rest. In response to who he thought was his competition he shot back – “I am my competition – I try to do better every time.”

The Press Conference was moderated by Rashmi Goel of Bollywood Steps.

“Singh is Kinng” opens in theaters on August 8, 2008.
