No doubt Kareena Kapoor is the hottest screen queen. She not only manoeuvres the marquee but today commands the kind of enviable position and market price that reminds one of Hema Malini and later Aishwarya Rai.

When Kareena signed on to do the sequel for Golmaal, she just wanted to have fun doing a genre she hadn't tried before. Little did she know that she would become one of the sequel's USPs in no time at all.

Says Kareena, "Golmaal Returns was a planned move in my career. I've done films with an ensemble cast before like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Omkara. But none of that was so much fun. I just want my role to be strong and effective. I've a really funny role. I play Tusshar's sister and my name is Ekta and I only watch Balaji serials the whole day. I play this suspicious housewife who keeps tab on her husband's movements all day long just because she sees women in soaps behaving that way. It's a loud colourful role. I've never done it before. Audiences are going to come out of Golmaal Returns feeling very happy. I don't want to restrict myself to serious cinema. I'd also like to do fun roles."

As the project progressed, Kareena found herself in a position where she could rope in best-friend Amrita Arora into projects. Amrita wangled pivotal roles in two big Kareena projects Golmaal Returns (opposite Arshad) and Sajid Nadiadwala's Kambakth Ishq (opposite Aftab Shivdasani).

Talented as she is, it would be hard to believe that Amrita's presence in these two projects is a mere coincidence.

As the shooting progressed Kareena's stardom got hotter. And her role of the suspicious and jealous housewife addicted to Balaji's Saas -Bahu serials was given the maximum glam quotient.

After the promotional theme track with the entire cast, Kareena shot a whole item number 'Tu Saala To Kaam Se Gaya' to herself.

Recently, another item song 'Meow' was also shot. Initially, this number was planned only for the promotional campaign. But now one hears Kareena's 'Meow' song will be used in the end titles.

Confirming these developments music director Pritam says, "What you've heard is right. I've also heard that the producers plan not to use the 'Saala' song. Both the item songs with Kareena were planned from the outset. The 'Meow' number was meant to go with the end titles."

One reason for this could be the word 'Saala' which many feel may be correct for 'Pappu' in Jaane Tu ....Ya Jaane Na but not Kareena.

Says Pritam. "We had the 'Saala' song in Golmaal Returns from before Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na. But yes I've heard it's going from the narration."

Adds Pritam, "At the moment composing songs for Kareena to perform on screen is a big high for any composer. The turning point in my career were the songs for Kareena in Jab We Met. I composed one item number for Kareena recently in 'Billoo Barber' and now two in Golmaal Returns."

After making sure Saif Ali Khan learnt the typical Uttar Pradesh dialect for Omkara, filmmaker Vishal Bharadwaj forced actress Vidya Balan to overcome her road phobia for a driving scene in his next movie Ishqiya.

"Vidya has an acute road phobia. She was petrified at the thought of driving earlier, but not any more," said a source close to the film.

"Driving a car was something completely alien to her. But Vishal saw to it that she mastered the art and now is pretty comfortable manoeuvring her car on the road," the source added.

The filmmaker is known to be particular about making his actors learn the required skills in reality rather than making them pretend on screen.

Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif seems to be the shining star of the hoardings of Subhash Ghai's forthcoming film Yuvvraj, with the male actors - Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor and Zayed Khan - taking a backseat.

"Katrina is considered to be a lucky mascot for her directors and Subhash is confident that Katrina will bring luck for him too," a source close to the project said.

The filmmaker apparently chose to give Katrina such a prominent spot to let her know that she has earned her rightful place in the film.

"Katrina has done a fabulous job in Yuvvraj and Subhash has witnessed the dedication with which Katrina has worked in the film. Hence the solo hoarding," the source added.

Zeenat Aman in the 1970s successfully paved the way from the ramp to the silver screen, setting a trend for years to come. Since then, there has been a steady rise of models trying their luck in Bollywood and, with every passing decade, their numbers have increased manifold. The successful careers of model-turned-actresses like Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra Juhi Chawla, Bipasha Basu and Sushmita Sen have proved that the ramp can be a stepping stone to the glamorous world of Bollywood.

In recent times, there have been additions to their numbers with actresses like Lara Dutta, Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone, Sayali Bhagat, Geeta Basra, Mugdha Godse and Jia Khan, among others, who have forayed into Bollywood with their modeling backgrounds.

Most models who walk the ramp have an aspiring actor inside them and feel the runway can give them the much-needed attention of producers and directors of the film industry.

Former Miss India World Natasha Suri, who won the title in 2006 and has been modelling since then, feels that the fashion fraternity and Bollywood are siblings.

“The fashion industry and the Bollywood have so many things in common that I feel they are very much inter-related. They are two siblings,” Suri, who will soon be foraying into Bollywood, told IANS.

Kingfisher calendar model Shruti Agarwal, who has been part of the fashion industry for the last three years, said that films will always be her first priority as this means going one step ahead of modelling.

“Films will be my first priority now. Everybody wants to go higher and do better things and film is definitely one step ahead. Bollywood is a bigger platform as far as the glamour industry is concerned,” she added.

Bollywood attracts not only Indian models, but a number of international ones have also set their eye on it.

Carolina Brytha, a 19-year-old model from Iceland who has been visiting India for various fashion shows, said though she had essentially come here for walking the ramp, she has also been part of various shoots.

“I have hired a local PR agency to get me more work on albums, ads and films. I already have done a few assignments,” she added.

Brytha said she has also done small roles in films and is looking forward to getting better offers.

“As Indian films fascinate me, I am looking forward to acting in films. Though I have done a few small roles, I think the Indian market is really big and I will be able to get better roles in future,” she added.

Fashion designer Lina Tipnis, who has worked with the likes of Aishwarya Rai, Sushmita Sen and Bipasha Basu, told IANS: “Fashion shows see a huge attendance of people from Bollywood and many of them come here to spot new faces. Therefore, I think there is a huge inter-change of talent from both the industries.”

“Besides, the gap between the two worlds is narrowing, with people from one getting involved in the other,” Tipnis added.

Kangna Ranaut is in an explosive mood. May be it has something to do with the 'explosive' cinema that she has been a part of ever since she made her debut with ‘Gangster’. From playing a gangster's love interest (which was straight out of headlines) in Gangster to re-enacting the trauma of Parveen Babi in ‘Woh Lamhe’ and most recently expressing the dilemma of Senior Executive at a Call Center in ‘Life In A Metro’, Kangna has been busy making her own space outside a world which goes by the name of Bollywood.

While working in aforementioned films, didn't she feel like being a part of a hardcore Bollywood commercial film to at least stay in the reckoning during her relatively leaner period?

"Everybody asks me this. But I never felt like being a part of a hardcore Bollywood commercial film because I have no respect for such cinema", Kangna makes a shocking confession.

She continues, "It is like an immortal work of art. For me my movies are my heart-beat. I cannot do a stupid film in which people laugh while they are watching it. So I have to be very careful".

Seems like she detests such cinema? "Yes, because it hurts me emotionally and mentally when people make fun about the characters in the film. I don't like people making fun of movies and characters. You should be given respect in society and for the work you do."

In that case, is ‘Fashion’ the kind of film which should get the actors in it the kind of respect she aims for? "I really hope so. Fashion will change the thinking of the society and what they think about the fashion world. I don't have a crystal ball to see what the future holds, but yes I do know that the film will do very well", says Kangna in a positive tone.

There has been long gap between her last film ‘Life In A Metro’ and ‘Fashion’. Was a break like this planned? Replies Kangna, "It was not planned. Some times it just takes too long for a project to complete. Even Fashion for that matter took about 6- 7 months to complete. In fact I did a film in the middle called Roshan but it didn't come. It will now come out after Fashion".

With Diwali round the corner, most Bollywood celebrities are looking forward to taking a break from their hectic work schedules and erratic work timings and spending the festival with their families - a joy they often miss out on.

Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi star Chitrangada Singh, who has been busy travelling around to promote her forthcoming movie Sorry Bhai, says she wants to be at home during the festival of lights.

"I have been on the move for quite some time now and Diwali is the time when I want to be with all my family members. It will be a quiet Diwali with family and friends and I will be sending out gifts to my close family members," said Chitrangada.

Actor-turned-director Jugal Hansraj has similar plans.

"I have nothing special on the agenda. I will be with my family and we will celebrate Diwali together. We will offer the evening prayers and after that I will meet my friends," said Jugal, whose directorial debut animation movie Roadside Romeo released Friday.

After days of promoting his film, he has planned to spend "quality" time with his family and friends. "I am not into playing cards or burning firecrackers but I will gorge on all the festival delicacies, as I am a big time foodie," he added.

Actor Sharman Joshi, who has two crucial films on the anvil - Golmaal Returns and Sorry Bhai - is also looking forward to the festival.

"I will be celebrating the festival with my three-year-old daughter. It will be more like introducing the festival to her so I am like really excited about it," he said.

Veteran actress Shabana Azmi hopes to have a blast on the festival by gorging on sweets and playing cards.

"I belong to a family of composite cultures and we celebrate Diwali, Holi, Eid, Christmas and all festivals with equal zest and fervour," she explained.

"I am really looking forward to Diwali - the crackers, the cards parties, meeting friends and sweets. Actually, every year, a bunch of my nephews come over and we all play cards. It's great fun. I also give out gifts to my friends and make it a point to handpick each one of them," she said.

Item girl and actress Payal Rohatgi is excited about the festival, especially after returning from her two-month stay on reality TV show "Bigg Boss" house. The actress is set to host a grand Diwali bash at her residence.

"This is going to be one big get- together with my near and dear ones and this time I am going to excuse myself from my diet regime and indulge in all the sinful sweets," said Payal.

"My parents are going to be with me and nothing makes me happier than this and I am looking forward to have a blast," she added.

Roadside Romeo

With the animated dog’s-life feature “Roadside Romeo,” Bollywood continues its technological juggernaut. A co-production of Yash Raj Films and Walt Disney Pictures, “Romeo” is something new under the Indian sun: sophisticated computer-generated animation that uses stars to voice the characters. But craftsmanship and Disney aside, “Romeo” is very much a conventional Hindi movie with a small-guys-versus-gangsters plot, song-and-dance sequences and film references galore.

Romeo, a honey-colored pup living on the Mumbai streets, has the voice of Saif Ali Khan, and he’s a typical Khan character, a Westernized sweet-talker with a propensity to start every sentence with “Dude” and “O.K. guys.” His idea for financial uplift? Open a hair salon, which he does with his crew of Bollywood-savvy mutts. (The uninitiated needn’t worry; the subtitles let no reference go unparsed, as in “Imitating Shah Rukh Khan” after a line of dialogue.) Trouble occurs when the gang runs afoul of Charlie Anna (Jaaved Jaaferi), the big don dog, who loves Laila (Kareena Kapoor), the same fluffy white creature with dreadful pink eye shadow that Romeo adores.

Written and directed by Jugal Hansraj, “Roadside Romeo” may have its stars’ voices, but what it needs is their bodies. Perhaps Bollywood’s most ingratiating quality is how hard the actors work to entertain you: they dance, they cry, they risk appearing silly. The animated dogs in “Romeo” aren’t particularly appealing. They mostly walk on two legs and, unlike Disney characters, don’t wear anything beyond neck gear. They look oddly naked and move awkwardly, which flattens the dance sequences and keeps the film earthbound.

And for all the movie-making know-how on display, “Romeo” isn’t visually attractive, though there are some nice touches: a dingy, spit-splattered “No spitting sign”; a beautifully detailed train; and peeling movie posters with images of larger-than-life stars, reminding us of Bollywood’s true glory.

yuvvraaj yuvraj movie music review

Subhash Ghai is one guy who knows how important music is for a Bollywood movie. He makes a good effort to ensure quality to the last bit. His soundtracks sell better than his films sometimes. Remember Taal? A.R Rahman’s music topped the charts for a really long time and the film blew up at the box office. Subhash Ghai is back with another flick titled Yuvvraaj. The film stars Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Anil Kapoor and Zayed Khan in lead roles. The music has been composed by A.R Rahman and the lyrics have been penned down by Gulzar. A typical Subhash Ghai menu. Yuvvraaj is slated for a November release. The music is finally out so let’s check it out!

Track Listing

01. Yuvvraaj - Main Hoon Yuvvraaj
02. Yuvvraaj - Tu Meri Dost Hain
03. Yuvvraaj - Shano Shano
04. Yuvvraaj - Tu Muskura
05. Yuvvraaj - Mastam Mastam
06. Yuvvraaj - Zindagi
07. Yuvvraaj - Dil Ka Rishta
08. Yuvvraaj - Manmohini Morey
09. Yuvvraaj - Shano Remix

The soundtrack starts with Salman Khan with the fifth of Beethoven trying to introduce his character in the film. As usual he’s more confusing than ever. Skip it and move to the next track Tu Meri Dost Hain (it is actually Hain and not Hai) which starts off really well. Sung by Banny Dayal and Shreya Goshal, the song is a soothing melody. The next track Shano Shano is a surprise from A.R Rahman. It sucks right from the moment it begins. Tu Muskura by Alka Yagnik and Javed Ali is another soft number. Gulzar’s lyrics are not as extraordinary as they usually are. Mastam Mastam is a typical A.R Rahman melody. It will remind you of Saathiya. Zindagi, the next track, reminds me of Hariharan. Rang De Basanti has a track which could easily be blamed for this song. Skip the next track. Manmohini Mere is my favourite track in the entire soundtrack. It has been sung by Vijay Prakash, a dude I have never heard of before, but he managed to make up for the bad music in the album. A slow yet excellent track. The soundtrack ends with a remix of Shano Shano. The remix is actually better than the original version.

On the whole, I really hope the double ‘V’ and ‘A’ work for Yuvvraaj. The soundtrack isn’t worth the money at all. Except for two tracks, the soundtrack is dull. Subhash Ghai and A.R Rahman have managed to disappoint. Finally!

Pain in the airplane: Equipped with a parachute, a cool leather topi and a Lalita Pawar-kind of sour lime expression, a woman sky-jumps, leaving her blockhead husband to go up in flames, boom, crash, splatzzz.

Over to Karzzz, remade by director Satish Kaushik from Subhash Ghai’s Karz (1980) which was remade from The Reincarnation of Peter Proud. Down with originality, yup with re-rebirth. So is the new Zzz-grader full-on ‘time-pass’ or would it be more entertaining to water the dry October grass?

Answer: If you’re the sort to be satisfied with a tandoori music score, some guffaw-out loud moments (intentional and unintentional) and a vitamin-oozing healthy Rohini Hattangadi (mashallah) being passed off as an insomniac, starving mom, then this could be your ticket.. for want of any alternative.

It’s deliriously amusing just for taking itself so darn seriously. Like it or not, remix director Kaushik doesn’t establish a distinctive directorial signature of his own.

The enterprise looks more piloted by the production T Series. T hee? And by the sheer enthusiasm and engine power of Himesh Reshammiya. Incidentally, the composer-singer-actor is so petrified of being compared with Rishi Kapoor that he’s announced this to every Tom, Duck and Harriet.

Next: NRI pop singers are rocking the world. Huh? Somewhere out there in Cape Clown, blondes faint on seeing Monty (Reshammiya) on stage. More with pleasure than shock, presumably. Monty serenades Tina (not Munim, Shweta Kumar alas) at one of those hotel functions, then suffers from headaches (What! Shweta did this to him?) and sees his past life flash before his eyes in very badly edited chip-chop scenes.

Next halt: Kenya. Danny Denzongpa shows up as Pran, eager to do his daughter Shweta’s Kenyadaan. Hurry, hurry, please. Prannyy even quotes movie dialogue (later he forgets to do this, but well). Gulshan Grover is around to punch at a kinky computer screen which hasn’t been updated for 25 years. Hmm. And Asrani yaks on about his three spinster daughters who are never seen. Did even newcomers reject the roles? Hilariously, there’s a Maid Martha who vanishes into the forests. Did the lions get her?

Be that as it may, Lady Kamini (Urmila Matondkar) breathes fire and brimstone, all in violent red shades, when she understands that Mr Monty is one of those re-born heroes. Reels and reels later, Lady K and Monty fight it out in a North by Northwest airplane finale. Truly, your heart goes out to Reshammiya for his sheer bravado. He’s improved since Aap ka Surroor but of course, he has many many more miles to go. Urmila Matondkar dignifies the enterprise but far too often, Kaushik seems to make her go over the top.

As for debutante Shweta Kumar, could she please learn to stand straight and quit smiling just to advertise her dentist? And heavens, Dino Morea is restricted mostly to playing a garlanded portrait. Quite histrionic that.

On the tech front, the camerawork and set designs are like festive mithai boxes. The choreography goes gaga over blonde chorus line girls and that’s it.

So, it’s not exactly your Farzzz to see Karzzz. The outcome’s neither good, nor bad, it’s a pitch at wooing the box-office, from A to Zzzz. And from advance reports, is already on its way to do the click trick.

Rating: **1/2

Indian actors Kareena Kapoor (2nd R) and Akshay Kumar (C) perform during the filming of the Bollywood production

The very statement that 'Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor are being paired together' brings all the makings of a Bollywood blockbuster in one's mind! Having said that, if we were to mention that Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Denise Richards and Brandon Routh join Akki and Bebo in the film, it would undoubtedly be one of the biggest Hindi films ever! Well, this film is none other than Sajid Nadiadwala's Kambakth Ishq! Needless to say that, with this, it becomes India's first film to boast of such a huge Indian and International starcast! The film is a romantic comedy about an Indian stuntman who takes Hollywood by storm.

The above pics were taken in Venice where Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor were shooting last week for a song sequence. From the looks of it, it seems like Akshay is trying his best to woo Kareena. The scale at which this film is being shot already makes it a potential blockbuster. Looks like there's no stopping for Akki!

Deepa Mehta plans to make an ambitious film on the 1914 Komagata Maru tragedy that demonstrated the racist policies of the then Canadian Government. Toronto-based Hamilton-Mehta Productions announced that Mehta has already signed Akshay Kumarto play the lead. Talks are also under way with various actors, including Hollywood A-listers.

"This is an important opportunity for me to reveal a significant moment in Canadian history and illustrate the steadfast bravery of the Sikh community, who sacrificed so much to help create a more tolerant community within my adopted country," says Mehta.

"I am not used to working with Oscar-nominated directors so it is a great privilege to work with Deepa Mehta," Akshay says. "The film's subject has moved me, as it is a true representation and a testimony to human struggles for freedom, justice and equality. I want to portray this real life tragedy to the world identifying how injustice was done to innocent people. It is an honour for me to play one of the bravest Sikhs, Gurdit Singh, in this tragic forgotten moment in history. I salute those brave souls, who sacrificed their lives for justice and equality."

Komagata Maru was a Japanese ship that carried 376 passengers, including Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs. It tried to dock in a Vancouver port but was denied permission due to a racist law called Continuous Journey, which was put in place by the then Conservative Canadian Prime Minister Robert Broden. It required ships to make a continuous passage to Canada [Images] for eligibility to dock and for passengers to disembark.

After several days of impasse between the police and the passengers, the ship was asked to turn back. Several people died on the way. But that was not the end of the ordeal. When the ship reached Kolkata, there was another problem with the local police, resulting in more loss of life.

"That [the continuous passage to Canada] was virtually impossible as ships could not make a continuous journey from any South Asian or Southeast Asian country without stopping at least once to refuel and restock supplies before reaching Canada," New Democratic Party member Penny Priddy explained. She had moved a motion in the House of Commons requiring the Canadian government to issue an official apology regarding this tragedy.

Prime minister Stephen Harper recently offered an official apology but it was done from a public platform in Surrey (British Columbia), which was in close proximity to the 1914 tragedy. But many local Sikhs protested, as they wanted an apology to be issued in the House of Commons as such an apology forms part of the official record, part of the history and not an apology from a public platform.

It is not clear whether Mehta's film on this historical tragedy will portray all these developments though a press release stated that the film will 'reveal this high level government intrigue, duplicity, racism, spying, military engagements, court battles, sedition and assassination.'

The film will be co-produced by Akshay's production house, Hariom Entertainment, and will cose approximately $30-35 million.

Two films. Two hits. And Deepika Padukone is comfortably placed amongst one of the top choices for a heroine when it comes to mainstream Bollywood cinema. No wonder, she finds herself on the hot seat as Sajid Khan chats up with her on 'Sajid Superstars'.

- Find her smiling and blushing for almost an entire episode as she charms one and all while facing the most scandalous and tricky questions. Example? On being asked to choose her favorite actor between Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar, she replied - 'When Shah Rukh Khan acts, the nation rocks with him. And when Akshay acts, he rocks the nation'. A reply that prompted Sajid to insist that she join the politics!

- Deepika tells facts about herself as a kid. Apparently, she took badminton quite seriously in her growing up years and was amongst the Top-3 in her state (Karnataka) when she was 15-16 years old. Even today, she maintains that given a situation, she can give quite a few a run for their money if asked to step on the badminton court. Just the right reason for Sajid to hand her over a shuttle-cock as a gift!

- She was also asked a question to choose the better looking man between her father (Prakash Padukone) and her love (Ranbir Kapoor). What did she reply?

- The world is aware about her alleged involvement with Yuvraj Singh. Hence, it was inevitable that she was thrown a query about his presence at her birthday party. Deepika's reply? 'Well, he is a friend and was there having dinner with us. Period.'

- Before being paired with Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om, Deepika had made her small screen debut with Himesh Reshammiya. Remember the video? Sajid plays it for the audience in the show.

- Meanwhile she appears to be quite confident about one of her upcoming films about which she is confident that it would be the biggest hit of 2009. The film has Akshay Kumar as her co-star and is titled Housefull. The director? Sajid Khan himself.

- Remembering her growing up years, Deepika confesses that she had a huge crush on Arjun Rampal. Apparently, the man was understandably embarrassed when Deepika told him the same during the shooting of Om Shanti Om.

- However, currently she is all loyal and committed to Ranbir Kapoor and admits that she belongs to the 'pati parmeshwar' variety who would love to see herself married to him 10 years down the line with number of kids around her.

- There was some fun in store though when she got into 'How well do you know Ranbir' round. When asked about Ranbir's stint as an assistant director in his early years, Deepika was confident that Black was the first film where he assisted Sanjay Leela Bhansali. However, that is not the case since years back; Ranbir had started his career with a different director. Any guesses?

To see all of this and lot more, tune in to 'Sajid Superstars' at 8:00 PM, Saturday on the newly launched channel COLORS!

Expectations from a soundtrack belonging to a Karan Johar film are straight forward - It has to be nothing but superb. With the kind of music that his films have boasted over the years (Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Kaal, Kal Ho Na Ho, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai), there is no reason why Dostana should be any different. Add to it names like Vishal and Shekhar who truly understand the pulse of today's youth and you know that this Abhishek Bachchan-Priyanka Chopra-John Abraham starrer would boast of an entertaining soundtrack all the way.

After listening to Dostana, you know that it is not just entertaining in get-set-rocking mode. Instead it also has its moments, especially when it comes to the soft numbers (there are three of them) and this is exactly where the core strength of Dostana lies. The album has a mix of everything - from dance number to softer tracks - all of it ensuring that Vishal-Shekhar have yet another successful album up their sleeves after Bachna Ae Haseeno, Tashan and Om Shanti Om.

A love song with some unconventional lyrics by Anvita Dutt Guptan, 'Jaane Kyun' is an excellent track that gives Dostana a kick start. If the catchy tune isn't good enough, it is the singer who comes behind the mike for this youthful track, who surprises the most. He is none other than Vishal Dadlani himself who shows an entirely different facet of his personality. He is confident enough to entrust himself with the responsibility of going solo for this flagship number of Dostana and doesn't make one feel that any other singer would have done a better job with 'Jaane Kyun'. A fun number which would find immense popularity all over. A track which requires just one hearing to be classified as a chartbuster being brought to you on a platter is 'Desi Girl'. Want some 'get-on-the-dance-floors' beats? Vishal & Shekhar get it for you. Need some catchy lyrics to get on your lips instantly? Lyricist Kumaar does the job right for you. Expect the singers to get some powerful energy in their vocals? Shankar Mahadevan and Sunidhi Chauhan along with Vishal Dadlani can always be entrusted to do that. And if you thought that the feel of 'Deewangee' (Om Shanti Om) couldn't ever be matched again, then choreographer Farah Khan is just a call away. Overall, a complete package deal where absolutely nothing goes wrong! A quintessential Punjabi dance number as far as the tune and arrangements are concerned, 'Maa Da Laadla' is the next to come. However, it is the lyrics by Kumaar which makes the number special as there is a lot being conveyed in this hardcore Punjabi number. If one diverts attention away from the racy tune of this number (which is bound to make its presence felt in the discotheques and clubs) and instead delve deep into the lyrics, you would realize that 'Maa Ka Laadla', which has singer Saleem at the helm, is one fun number which would aid the film's narrative in a big way. Watch out for this one! Next comes the much hyped item number in Dostana which features Shilpa Shetty jiving along with Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham on the Miami beach. Titled 'Shut Up & Bounce', the song may sound like a routine/typical dance number but that doesn't come in the way of the potential it holds as far becoming popular in days to come. With Sunidhi Chauhan leading from the front and Vishal Dadlani providing additional vocals, 'Shut Up & Bounce' written by Anvita is all set to be an eye candy all the way, courtesy Miss Shetty and other bevy of beauties expected to dominate the frames captured on the Miami beach. Vishal and Shekhar reserve the best for the end with two extremely soothing numbers bringing Dostana to an end. First to come is 'Khabar Nahi' which is just the kind that you wish to put in a repeat mode, switch off the lights, close your eyes and expect the song to make you go for that peaceful sleep. If Vishal excelled as a singer in 'Jaane Kyun', one has to hear him in 'Khabar Nahi' where is quite good yet again. A beautiful melody which keeps you smiling away as it plays in the background, 'Khabar Nahi' is a love song written by Anvita which also has Shreya Ghoshal and Amanat Ali lending their vocals along with Raja Hasan. Shaan would indeed consider himself lucky as he is gifted the best tune and lyrics (Vishal Dadlani does an all around show in the album and also contributes with his writing) in the form of 'Kuch Kum'. A poetic track which moves at a serene pace and has in it the potential to scale the kind of height which the title song of 'Kal Ho Na Ho' did (as far as the soothing feel is concerned) 'Kuch Kum' is easily the best of the lot and is immensely likeable within first listening itself. It is a kind of number that you don't really want to over analyze and instead just hear it to enjoy it to the fullest. No wonder, it has the longest duration when compared to the rest and lasts for close to 6 minutes. Dostana is an excellent album from Vishal-Shekhar and there is not one single number which doesn't work. In fact if three soft numbers ('Kuch Kum', 'Khabar Nahi' and 'Jaane Kyun') are the pick of the lot then 'Desi Girl' is a definite must for the dance floors. 'Maa Da Laadla' and 'Shut up & Bounce' have their own place under the sun and if the film works well at the theaters (which it should), there is no reason why Dostana won't go on to match the kind of sales that the biggest albums of 2008 (Race, Singh Is Kinng, Jannat, Tashan, JTYJN) have enjoyed this year. Go for it!
