Tashan is not releasing until next month, but the craze for the film is already reaching huge proportions with last year's top superstar Akshay Kumar acting in a yash raj film after over a decade, being supported by a lineup of Saif Ali Khan and Anil Kapoor.
Kumar, who outside of Amitabh Bachchan and perhaps Govinda in the 90s, has benefitted the most at the Hindi belt box office across the last 25 years, is coming off last year's biggest All India grosser Welcome (114 crores) and a string of hits including Bhool Bhulaiya, Hey Baby as well as Namaste London which did reasonably good business in Delhi-Punjab primarily.
However ironically Akshay Kumar has never had a film in his career set a Bombay opening record, let alone All India opening record, measures typically used to differentiate superstars from the stars. That may now change with Tashan. The film is expected to do business on a different level altogether. It will be releasing on well over 1000 prints and could be the first film to move past Dhoom 2. Contrary to perception, Dhoom 2 of 2006 is still the biggest grosser of India. Though last year Om Shanti Om tried, and Welcome came close, it wasn't enough.
Tashan however now is expected to set a new opening collection mark in Bombay as well as nationally and take Akhshay Kumar's stretch of box office run onto the record plane.
