Just a word of caution before you watch this film: SINGH IS KINNG is not for the intellectuals or those pretending to be one. It's not for the hard-nosed critics either.

Now read on…

Vipul Shah. Anees Bazmee. Akshay Kumar. Katrina Kaif. Four names for whom success has become a habit. That makes SINGH IS KINNG the most awaited movie of the season. Must add, the wait was worth it!

You know the rules when you watch a hardcore entertainer: Just don't look for logic. If you do, too bad for you, for you would never enjoy a film of this genre and more specifically, SINGH IS KINNG.

Anees Bazmee's films are very high on entertainment. The plotline may be paper-thin, perhaps ludicrous and farcical, but when did Bazmee ever promise a SCHINDLER'S LIST or a SAVING PRIVATE RYAN? SINGH IS KINNG works because it delivers what it promises: Full on entertainment!

Bazmee has the knack of making immensely watchable fares that cater to the aam junta. SINGH IS KINNG isn't a laughathon in entirety. Comedy, romance, action and drama, everything is well synchronised in those 2.10 hours here.

But, wait, SINGH IS KINNG isn't a foolproof product. It has its share of flaws, the turn of events aren't captivating at times, but SINGH IS KINNG moves so fast and packs in so much, there's no time to think or analyze.

The final word? SINGH IS KINNG is a delicious and scrumptious pav-bhaji served in the finest cutlery. Your taste buds are sure to relish it... and ask for more!

Lakhan Singh aka Lucky [Sonu Sood] is the King of the Australian underworld, accompanied by his associates [played by Javed Jaffrey, Neha Dhupia, Manoj Pahwa, Yashpal Sharma, Kamal Chopra and Sudhanshu Pande]. Far away, in a small village in Punjab, where Lucky was born, there exists someone more notorious than him - Happy Singh [Akshay Kumar].

The village is fed up of Happy's magnanimity, which has resulted in a number of hilariously disastrous situations. Out of desperation, they decide to send him on a long trip [that will keep him out of the village for a while!] to bring Lucky back to Punjab, as his despicable deeds were maligning their image in Australia.

The happy-go-lucky bumpkin, taking his mission a bit too seriously, embarks on his journey, accompanied by his friend, Rangeela [Om Puri], who hates Happy for dragging him into it.

The high point of his journey is his chance meeting with Sonia [Katrina Kaif], with whom he falls in love, but upon reaching his destination, things take a precarious turn as he runs into a series of comic misadventures, leaving him penniless. He is fortunate to find warmth and affection in an elderly lady [Kirron Kher].

In a strange turn of events, an attempt on Lucky's life is foiled by a well-intentioned Happy, who fights off the attackers by risking his own life. Following the altercation, Lucky lands up in hospital paralyzed and Happy, unexpectedly, finds the tables turned on him when he is expected to assume the role of the new King.

Few minutes into the film and you know that SINGH IS KINNG is a lavish spectacle that's high on entertainment. Sonu Sood chasing a gora assassin at the very start or minutes later, Akshay chasing a hen - SINGH IS KINNG starts with gusto.

And Bazmee doesn't let you wear your thinking caps all through the first hour. From India to Egypt to Australia, from the comforts of his home in Punjab, to the humble abode of a woman selling flowers in Sydney [Kirron Kher], SINGH IS KINNG involves you in the journey.

And then Akshay becomes the King. Oh, how he becomes the King is equally hilarious. The sequence at the hospital [Sonu Sood is diagnosed with a weird disorder] is simply hilarious. There's a twist in the tale at the intermission point and the second hour, therefore, shifts gears - it changes from kabhi funny, kabhi drama to a prem kahani.

It's smooth sailing till there's another twist towards the pre-climax [wouldn't like to reveal it, since it would act as a spoiler]. But, frankly, the film could've done without this track. The narrative, thankfully, is back on tracks soon after.

Anees Bazmee has a flair for writing great entertainers that work big time with the masala-loving junta. If you've loved NO ENTRY and WELCOME, you'd love SINGH IS KINNG too. This time, Bazmee shares the writing credits with Suresh Nair and the duo come up with some real wacky episodes. In terms of production design, this is Bazmee's most lavish fare so far. It's a grandiose product.

Pritam's music is already popular and it compliments the goings-on completely. 'Bhootni Ke', 'Jee Karda' and the title track stand out, while 'Teri Ore' is easy on the nerves. Ben Nott and Sanjay Gupta's cinematography is top notch.

Akshay Kumar takes rapid strides with SINGH IS KINNG. Sure, you've seen him in comic fares time and again and perhaps, there might be a doubt, Will he carry it off yet again? Oh yes, he does! There's no saturation point as far as this actor is concerned. He holds your attention in every sequence, irrespective of how strong the scene is, and that's the biggest compliment for any actor. SINGH IS KINNG without Akki is like an ocean without marine life. Akshay rules!

The camera loves Katrina Kaif and it shows in SINGH IS KINNG too. She looks bewitching and enacts her part with tremendous confidence. Kirron Kher is superb and so is Om Puri. Terrific performances! They compliment Akki so well. Ranvir Shorey is first-rate. Sonu Sood is another actor who's finally getting his due in Hindi films. Javed Jaffrey's character works big time till he does a somersault in the pre-climax. Neha Dhupia is engaging. The nok-jhonk between Sudhanshu Pandey and Yashpal Sharma is perfect. Manoj Pahwa is good.

On the whole, SINGH IS KINNG lives up to the hype and hoopla. Want a joyride without taxing your brains? Board the SINGH IS KINNG wagon. At the box-office, the film will fetch a hurricane-like start. The paid previews, the opening weekend, the first week business, everything will be record-shattering. Notwithstanding the new oppositions in the weeks to come, SINGH IS KINNG will rule the hearts of the aam junta [whose verdict matters the most] as also the box-office, proving a record holder in the final tally. Blockbuster Hit!

The industry’s arguably most bankable star Akshay Kumar held court at a press conference of “ Singh is Kinng” at the Hilton Hotel here on July 25 organized by its distributors Studio 16 and producers Adlabs Films Ltd.

The conference opened with Kumar denying the suggestion that the title of the movie implied that it was targeted towards Punjabis. Pointing to the cross on a chain on his neck he said “Look I am wearing a cross – but I am a Punjabi. I believe in everything.” He explained the message he wished to convey in this movie is that anybody with a positive attitude can become a ‘King’ too. He added that it was not money or power which made one happy but how one dealt with life. In a world filled with negatives when all one sees or reads about is murder, rape, war etc he said he hoped his “small” film would cheer and inspire audiences to develop , in his words “positivity” to face life with grace and joy.

The film took seed while after a shooting for “Bhool Bhuliya” when Akshay Kumar found himself driving behind a truck with the message “Singh is King” displayed at its rear. The banner stuck in his head. Flashing his lights for clearance to overtake, the driver, a Sardar gave way and when being passed he gave Kumar such a cheerful greeting with a beaming smile that he was struck by the ordinary driver’s positive attitude. Even being in what was obviously a very difficult profession and circumstances. On getting home he immediately called his producer Vipul Shah and told him he had to make a movie with this name and with the positive personality of the truck driver he had encountered. He hopes this becomes a landmark film as it is his first home production.

In defense of the knowledge of English of the driver the “King” on the back of the truck was correctly spelt with a single “n” and Kumar clarified it was for numerological considerations that Vipul Shah had added an extra “n” to make it “Kinng” as he had done in his production “ Namastey London “ when the “Y” was added at the end for the same reason.

He said it includes both comedy and action. He reminded audiences it was far more difficult to pull off comedy than the action scenes which he said are “easy.” But he made it clear in “Kinng” the action is of the humorous variety which anyone from a child to a grandparent would enjoy. He said that he has come to abhor violence and brutality and prefers to gift fans with light hearted fare which was worth spending their money on rather than grim, serious stuff or loads of bloodshed and carnage. At the same time he clarified that he would not refuse serious roles outright, citing his performance in the thriller “Eight By Ten” under production.

Referring to his role in “Kinng” the still boyish looking actor said it was one for which needed no preparation whatsoever as his character “Happy Singh” is a reflection of his own positive philosophy. “The role just flowed “he added “because it is me.”

Katrina Kaif is a “perfect ‘ producer’s actress” complimented Akshay Kumar about his co-star in the film. He recalled she had arrived in India with just stars in her eyes without knowing a single word – even “shukriya” in Hindi. “That she had learned the language as also Urdu so quickly and efficiently speaks volumes of her professionalism and dedication he added. “She’s huge now” he gushes pointing out she has delivered 5 back to back hits, matched by very very few in the history of Bollywood.

When asked about his meeting with Sylvester Stallone recently who plays a part in a movie Kumar is shooting, he indulged in a brief flash back when he reminisced about his humble beginnings as a waiter. At his workplace he had a poster of Stallone, because he wanted to be macho like him and another of Sreedevi because he hoped to have a girlfriend like her one day. At that time he said it had been just a dream and now, what more could he ask for life when he had already lived that dream by having been able to work with and gain the friendship of both his idols?

“Globalization is very big for me” stated Akshay Kumar and in this context he felt he was entering into production at the most opportune time. Bollywood he said is fast gaining ground worldwide and international audiences have started realizing that it is not just about singing songs and running around trees. Just a couple of years ago he remarked that releases were made with around 800 prints , but today it had touched 2000 and he predicts this would explode to 4000 by 2010.

The secret he attributes for his success seems much too oversimplified but something the “Kinng” deeply believes works for him. For one thing he starts every project with “ Om,” – his father’s name and the other , he touches the feet of his parents and then he goes to work and lets their magic blessings do the rest. In response to who he thought was his competition he shot back – “I am my competition – I try to do better every time.”

The Press Conference was moderated by Rashmi Goel of Bollywood Steps.

“Singh is Kinng” opens in theaters on August 8, 2008.

On the small screen, Akshay 'Khiladi' Kumar may be seen encouraging 13 beautiful ladies to do some daredevil stunts in his new reality show Fear Factor- Khatron Ke Khiladi. However, when it comes to the big screen, Akki himself would be seen doing some really brave stunts and action scenes in his forthcoming release Singh Is Kinng.

Bollywood's favorite action hero would be seen fighting with eight WWE wrestlers from Australia in an action sequence in Vipul Shah's Singh Is Kinng.

Says director Anees Bazmee," We had called some eight wrestlers who all are from WWE. They were all very excited to be a part of Singh Is Kinng. Apart from shooting with Akshay, they all spoke to him at length about his films. I was surprised that few of them had even seen his films. They all shared a very good rapport with Akshay and there was this very famous wrestler called Chris who even taught him some tricks in arm-wrestling."

Akshay sure has a special interest in WWE. A few years back, he had fought against famous the WWE wrestler 'The Undertaker' for a fight sequence in Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi. Now in Singh Is Kinng, he is seen fighting eight WWE wrestlers from Australia. One can't wait to see when Akshay will take on our very own- The Great Khali - (on screen of course). That would be one fight we can't wait to watch.

Spectacular -- that's the right word to describe the two-and-a-half minute theatrical trailer of SINGH IS KINNG, which will be out in theatres in a couple of days from now. Believe me, we haven't seen something like this in a long, long time.

Any promo should give the viewer a feel of the film and that's what this trailer does. It's not a mindless comedy, with a few comic thrown in for effect, you realize this at the very outset. SINGH IS KINNG is the keenly awaited movie of the season and the promo more than justifies the hype surrounding the movie.

The trailer opens with Sonu Sood's character taking court of his kingdom in Australia, then breaks into a Hollywood style action sequence, followed by Punjab da puttar Akshay Kumar staging an entry. He's on a quest to bring Sonu Sood back home and ends up in a detour to Egypt's exotic locations where he encounters Katrina Kaif. And from there he moves on to his journey in Australia.

There's more to follow: Breath-taking action scenes [in fact, never seen before] picturized over the Australian skyline and also in the sea. The action is at par with any Hollywood film and the locales are jaw-dropping. Interspersed with great music and colourful costumes, this promo packs in so much in those couple of minutes. Note the funny one-liner by Akki in the end, it leaves you with a smile on your face.

If the trailer is an indicator of things to follow, expect a hurricane called SINGH IS KINNG to arrive on August 8.

Akshay Kumar loves to do his own stunts, and loves to do some exciting ones too. That's why his action scenes in Singh Is Kinng is quite over-the-top, as he jumps from one elevator to another, and from a jet ski into a flying helicopter!

The man responsible for these daring stunts is Australian stunt director Danny Baldwin, who is a part of this film.

Danny has worked with Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai and Michael Douglas in The Ghost And The Darkness earlier.

How did you happen to do the stunts for Singh is Kinng?

[Producer] Vipul Shah approached me. I believe they had approached many others too but I was selected. This is my first Indian film.

How has the experience been working with Indian cast and crew?

It was a very unique
experience. I came to India for a few days to shoot. It was my first
visit to India. Indian stars are very talented, unlike Hollywood
actors.

How was it working with Akshay Kumar, and making him do your stunts?

He is very talented. It was
difficult to hold him back from doing stunts. He was excited about all
the stunts. I had stunt doubles for him but he would always want to do
it himself.

What kind of stunts have you directed in this film?

They are hard core, Hollywood kind of stunts. A lot of action can be expected from the film.

Do you follow Bollywood or Indian films?

Though I do not understand the
language, I look up the names on the net and do my research on the
films. I watch the films and try to follow them.

I think there is lot of talent in India. The population is very young and energetic.

How would you describe the action in Singh is Kinng?

It is very snappy and fast. It
will appeal the young crowd of India for sure. Indians are so
influenced by the West that they have started liking Hollywood stunts.
So it has become a necessity to have such over-the-top kind of action
sequences.

What do you think about Indian stunt directors?

I have met a few of them. I
think they are very talented and skilled. The only thing they need is
exposure. They need to lift their standards and spend more time on
exploring different type of action.

So what next?

I would like to direct and
produce a hard core action film. I am thinking of roping Indian stars
in it. It will be an English film with Indian stars too.

This year's eagarly-awaited romantic comedy, Singh is Kinng, revolves around a gang of crooks transformed by a good man and his selfless love for a pretty girl.

Lucky (Sonu Sood) is the
'king' of the Australian underworld. But far away, in his hometown in
Punjab, there is someone even more notorious than him -- Happy Singh
(Akshay Kumar). The village decides to send him on a long trip, and
bring Lucky back to Punjab, as his despicable deeds are maligning their

The village bumpkin embarks on
his journey, where he goes through a series of adventures, meets Lucky,
and even manages to find time for love when he meets Sonia (Katrina
Kaif).

Singh Is Kinng is directed by Anees Bazmee of No Entry and Welcome fame.

Incidentally, the film found its title from the back of a truck!

Apparently, Akshay Kumar was driving through Jaipur when he spotted a truck with the words, Singh is King, printed at the back.

However, the film is not about any specific community.

One of the highlights of the film is Snoop Dogg's number, which is part of the film's soundtrack.

The video will be shot in Los Angeles.

The title track of the film is rendered by Bombay Vikings' Neeraj Shridhar, and composed by Pritam.

Katrina is apparently charmed by Egypt, where she shot a song with Akshay.

"It's among the most beautiful
countries I have visited -- the pyramids, the temples and the landscape
are exotic. I even enjoyed the barbecue dinner on a boat on the Nile.
We shot in a number of places and I've come back with fond memories of
my trip," she says.

The song, Jee Karda, was shot at 4 am everyday to capture the light.

The film is also shot in Punjab and Australia.

After her recent flops like Ek Chalis Ki Last Local and Rama Rama Kya Hai Yeh Drama, Neha Dhupia hopes to squeeze in a hit with Singh is Kinng.

She plays Julie in the film, a bold and beautiful girl in a gang of goons, headed by Sonu Sood's Lucky.

The keenly awaited Snoop Dogg-RDB number for Singh Is Kinng has been recorded at last and will form a part of the film's soundtrack when it releases.

At present, there are plans to shoot the video in Los Angeles, where Akshay is headed for another film shoot. Both Akki and Katrina haven't stopped raving about the track!

Remarks Kumar, "The song is mind-blowing. I made a few friends listen to it and they haven't stopped gushing about it. I am confident that just like the rest of the soundtrack this will go on to become a major chartbuster."

Katrina seconds Akki's sentiments. "I've heard it and it's outstanding. If I'm right, it's the first real hip-hop song in a Hindi movie. I know that girls are supposed to be an integral part of hip-hop videos but I don't know whether there will be place for me in this video!" she laughs.

"It's very male-dominated and I don't want to be a prop. With Akshay and Snoop, it will rock anyway!" she adds.

Meanwhile, the title track of the film, rendered by Neeraj Shridhar and composed by Pritam, is likely to go on television later this week.

Singh Is Kinng releases worldwide on August 8 and previews in select locations on August 7. It is an Indian Films-Studio 18 release.

The first ever-live stage performance of the much loved onscreen ‘jodi’ Akshay and Katrina that was to end the three day grand IIFA event was undoubtedly the best showstopper to the glitzy affair. However, even though the show stole the hearts of millions, Akki’s cold shoulder to Kat left the lady heartbroken just minutes before the show was to go live.

It all started when Katrina reportedly started getting jitters about her performance and frantically started dialing Akki’s number. Apparently, Katrina who even though rocks on stage, still gets cold feet every time she has to deliver a live performance.

And with her beau Sallu back in Mumbai, the lady thought to rely on her second most close confidante, Akshay Kumar for some emotional tête-à-tête. But Akki was nowhere to be found.

Sources told Spicezee that Katrina was seen outside Akki’s vanity van asking if anyone knew where the actor was. The actress kept on dialing his number but Akki chose to ignore her calls.

And care to guess why? Well, Akshay was surely in a tight spot as he was attending to the whims and fancies of his wife Twinkle.

The actor surely has his priorities cut out straight as he wisely chose to play a good husband and keep company to Twinkle before his much awaited performance. And only went to meet Katrina when his performance was on.

With this done, it’s now sure that Kat’s sexiest woman tag, has absolutely no effect whatsoever on her reel life sweetheart Akshay Kumar. It’s time Katrina sets Sallu and Sallu only on her speed dial list!

Katrina KaifIt has become somewhat customary for Katrina Kaif’s skirt to raise a few hackles.

We all know of the controversy that Katrina Kaif unwillingly created when she went to the holy Sufi shrine at Ajmer in a short skirt to shoot a scene for Vipul Shah’s film Namastey London . That controversy was resolved only after Shah decided to delete the sequence altogether from the film.

Now, an almost similar incident reportedly happened while shooting Shah’s home production Singh Is Kinng in Egypt.

Katrina was to shoot against the backdrop of the great pyramids along with co-star Akshay Kumar but the local police reportedly arrived at the scene and objected to Katrina’s outfit that exposed her bare legs.

Egypt is predominantly a Muslim nation and revealing outfits are not accepted in public places there.

Reports say director Anees Bazmee , who was determined to shoot at the pyramids, managed to get the matter resolved with the help of others.

And thankfully another skirt controversy was successfully skirted.

Akshay Kumar is a busy man. The actor has been travelling around the world for his film shootings and shows. He is currently shooting for Singh is Kinng in Egypt but today he is coming to Mumbai to apply for visa for the Bahamas.

Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif's forthcoming film "Singh is Kinng" is setting benchmarks in the trade by pooling in highest moolah for every territory in India.

The worldwide distributor of "Singh is Kinng", Studio 18 had bought all the rights of the film for little lesser than Rs. 65 crore last year before the film went on floors. The film is now releasing on 8 August and Studio 18 has begun to sell territory-wise theatrical rights of the film.
