But after the successful run of the show, the the actor has demanded a hike in his price. He wanted a hike to Rs 2.5 crores per episode. Incidentally, Sallu had been booked for Rs 89 crores for 104 episodes of 10 Ka Dum. Akshay has been running the price race pretty arduously and is now closing in on the two Khans.

Our source adds, "The producers, Endemol and the channel Colors are deciding the location of the second season. The shoot is tentatively scheduled for next month. Akshay's first priority is his films, so only once he is done with his movie schedule, will he start shooting for the show.

The producers are contemplating having celebrities as well as the general public as contestants. Right now things are at the nascent stage and there is possibility of last minute changes."

When contacted, Akshays manager Lokesh Bali said, "Akshay has given his nod to this second season of the show but I cant reveal the details as yet. Nothing has been decided. Akshay is extremely kicked about the whole thing since Fear Factor is all about daredevilry and Akshay simply loves that. Things will start rolling in a month. WITH Chandni Bar, Page 3, Corporate and Traffic Signal behind him, director Madhur Bhandarkar has developed a trademark style of film making which has the word `realistic' incessantly tagged on to it, by both the viewers and the industrywallahs. Well, Bhandarkar's oeuvre may not exactly fall into the classic cinema verite cult, nevertheless, it does try to bridge the gap between art house cinema and mainstream masala with its declaration: Are you ready for the bitter truth? Yup.

Each time the filmmaker picks up a subject, he proposes to do an expose on a particular segment of society. And each time, there is a dogged attempt to reveal the underbelly: ugly, festering and foul. Fashion too falls prey to this inbuilt bias of the director's creative vision and introduces a degree of predictability in the plot. The first half of the film is a relentless replay of all the cliches one would associate with the world of glamour. Small town girls need to shed their middle class morality before they can scale the ladder of success.

Successful models are sad, lonely, broken people, addicted to drugs, alcohol, cigarettes. Godfathers are cruel, manipulative, exploitative. And last but not least, Brokeback Mountain isn't just a film for male fashion designers; it's a lifestyle statement for most of them.

Mercifully, Fashion isn't about cliches alone and manages to transcend them with it's moving tale of three women who try to maintain their honour, dignity, identity in a cruel world that spills over with grime behind the glamour. The film not only takes you behind the psychedelic ramp, it travels through the dark inner recesses of the three lead characters, laying bare their strengths and weaknesses; their fears and hopes; their dreams and nightmares.

If Meghna Mathur's (Priyanka Chopra) journey from Chandigarh to Mumbai is a tortuous coming-of-age sojourn for a small town girl who dreams to become a super model, then reigning diva, Shonali Gujral (Kangana Ranaut) travels through her own personal inferno, ending up totally singed when the arc lights fade. Between them is Janet Sequeira (Mughda Godse), the high on EQ model who chose to make her own compromises by giving up her career and settling down in a faux marriage with her gay designer friend, Samir Soni. Three distinct women who make a choice between success and failure, sanity and insanity, life and loneliness...and create a sensitive parable on bonding and empowerment.

Dramatically, it's Priyanka's journey that is the most comprehensive as it tackles her growth from an ambitious, young girl to an arrogant model who fails to handle her success, crumbles and then rises again, like the proverbial Phoenix. The actress delivers a competent performance and yet, has tough competition from the other two girls.

Debutante Mughda pitches in a confident portrayal of the sweet and sensitive buddy. But the show stopper (read scene stealer) is crazy, kinky, Kangana who does an exquisite metamorphosis from a wispy, high-strung, nervous child-woman to a stunning ramp diva. Watch her handle her wardrobe malfunction, make faces at her nagging manager or exchange bitter workplace truths with rival Priyanka in the ladies' washroom and you'll realise she's perfected the Girl Interrupted act after similar roles in Woh Lamhe, Life in a Metro and Gangster . The men? No place for them, specially since the women completely overshadow them.

Of course, the film desperately needs some tight editing to cut out the flab. Nevertheless, go, witness woman power, in all its agony and ecstasy.

DUMB seems to be getting dumber. Funny is beginning to feel unfunny. And Bollywood's current tryst with comedy isn't quite `Welcome' anymore.

Of course, the first Golmaal itself wasn't a high IQ exercise, with its tale of overgrown college students ending up in a blind couple's house. But there were some robust moments of sheer fun along with some crackling chemistry between the foursome: Ajay, Arshad, Sharman, Tusshar.

Here, talented Sharman Joshi has been replaced by also-talented Shreyas Talpade and Kareena Kapoor, basking in the success of Jab We Met , has been added to enhance the star value of the film. Ironically, the silicone shots don't seem work, as the film keeps sagging to unlimited depths, thanks to a no-brainer script and some really bad acting.

First the script. Ajay Devgan has an extended family which includes his couch potato wife, Kareena, his bimbette sister, Amrita Arora and his dumb brother-in-law, Tusshar Kapoor. Wife Kareena is an inveterate serial watcher and draws all her life's mantras from the Kyunki-Kahani soaps of Ekta Kapoor. Naturally, she suspects her husband when he spends a whole night on a yatch away from her. The husband, who had tried to save a desperate girl, ends up spinning an implausible yarn to save his skin.

The rest is one miserable rigmarole, where Tusshar and Shreyas try to infuse some madcap moments in the tedium, while the rest of the people just keep screaming and running.

It's quite sad to watch seasoned actors like Ajay Devgan and Arshad Warsi goof up in comic roles that they managed to carry off with elan in the earlier film. Shreyas, once again, displays his sense of comic timing, visible in Dor , while Tusshar proves that his dumb act in both the films might just end up as his career best.

The girlie brigade is completely unwatchable, especially Kareena who seems to be sleepwalking through the film. Again, sad, since she's such a fine actress and had managed to become the nation's fav girl after Jab We Met .

Ready for a third sequel? Not if it's as brain dead as the second.

While bashes are the talk of the town, let us apprise you on Akshay Kumar’s Diwali fete which sure was a star-studded event.

Kareena and Saif landed up, followed by Arbaaz and Malaika Khan together with Amrita Arora. Then there was Akki’s co-actor Deepika Padukone who came with beau Ranbir Kapoor. Cho chweet,na? And when the crowd left, Abhishek-Aishwarya and Preity-Ness turned up to celebrate the festival at 2 am.

Well, this is what happens when some common friends don’t get along. Preity and Bebo aren’t the best of pals. Never mind polite convos, they hardly even say hello to each other, and Abhishek and Kareena are a big no-no, too!

So the late entrants had a smart strategy – to avoid any possible controversies and interaction with some not-so-loved ones. So here’s to a peaceful and warm Diwali that Akki managed to pull off. Sorry guys, there was no masaledaar dhamaka here.

Which underdog doesn't want to become a millionaire? In British director Danny Boyle's SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, he is Jamal from the slums of Mumbai. The film made a stunning impact at the recent Toronto Film Festival.

Living in a slum and earning of millions? Whom are you kidding? Well, if it's a plucky kid like orphan Jamal who grows up in abject poverty in the slums, but still makes million, you have to believe it. Because that's how typical rags to riches stories are churned out by Bollywood with the mandatory happy ending with the lady-love in tow.

But suppose this Bollywood story theme is adopted with a twist by a western director like Danny Boyle, the well-known independent British filmmaker, what do you get? A winner like SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE that wowed the audience during its official launch at the recently concluded 33rd Toronto Film Festival. So much so that it won the Cadillac People's Choice Award indisputably.

Boyle turns a Mumbaikar's story aspiring to rise above the circumstances into a funny, sardonic, tragi-comic narration moving at a break-neck speed through the travails of Jamal. Boyle's earlier films like TRAINSPOTTING on a group of heroin-addicted youths, 28 DAYS LATER, a sci-fi film, among others, made him almost a cult figure. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE adds another feather in his cap.

For an Indian audience, the format of the film is instantly recognizable: the extremely popular television game show sometime ago, Kaun Banega Crorepati, the Indian version of UK's Who Wants to be a Millionaire. The screenplay is loosely based on diplomat Vikas Swarup's debut novel Q & A. In the book, Ram Mohammad Thomas,18, is arrested by the police on a complaint by the producers of the game show. As they reason, how come a mere waiter from the slums could answer all the questions correctly and hit the jackpot? He must have had cheated. Swarup begins his book tellingly: 'I have been arrested. For winning a quiz show. They came for me late last night, when even the stray dogs had gone off to sleep…There was no hue and cry...Arrests in Dharavi are as common as pickpockets on the local train.'

In the film, Jamal, the chai-walla, is the prototype of Ram Mohammad Thomas. He and his brother Salim, get orphaned during the Bombay riots and become street urchins- 'slumdogs'. His long journey to survive in the metropolis and outside might seem unreal to an audience familiar with the Taj Mahal (it features in the film too), Gateway of India or the glittering lifestyle of the modern Indian city. But to us, it's not so strange. The world of slums and poverty, the adulation for stars like the Big B in this scenario, the desperation to survive against huge odds, in short, portraits of the underbelly of 'shining' cities, is not too far from our consciousness.
The characters inhabiting this world are familiar too - the so-called do-gooders on the prowl looking for displaced kids and in the name of giving food and shelter, disfiguring them to turn into street-side beggars, little girls plucked to convert them into nautch girls, Mafia dons exploiting poor boys to groom them for the henchman's job, as Salim becomes in the unforgiving world.

But Jamal does not give in so easily. So he slogs. The soft corner for little Latika, an orphan like him, and taken away by the evil 'charity-giving' gang also remains though he has lost touch with her.

But the film's strength is in looking at life with a lot of humour, and saluting the resilience of the human spirit. The same resilience that makes Jamal shun the kind of violent lifestyle Salim chooses, the same steadfastness that makes him hope to meet Latika one day because he realizes he loves her, and a doggedness that makes him enter the KBC show on a fluke.

Understandably, anyone would wonder how could a tea-vendor without a formal education stand up to the scrutiny of the sophisticated show's host. Well, for most Indians who believe in bhagya- fate, it can happen. After all, every question asked in the show happens to have a relevance to Jamal's conflicting past- the make of a gun, the pictures on a dollar bill (he and his gang conned American tourists at the Taj Mahal blithely), and so on. And so he wins.

The brilliant touch is in the Q & A sessions when the viewers in every other Indian household wait breathlessly for the answer to come along. And when it's correct, they jump with joy. For isn't it a dream of every man on the street to win that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow? Jamal reflects their aspirations. He keeps their hope afloat.
Jamal also manages to find Latika in a don's den and Salim, a changed man, helps to set her free. At the end of the show Jamal and Latika are united again through the ubiquitous cell-phone (KBC's helpline?). As the curtain came down with Jamal and Latika doing the happy-ending Bollywood film scene dancing exuberantly complete with extras, on a Mumbai railway station platform, the audience in many screenings in Toronto stood up applauding, and honestly a few even did a jig keeping with the tune. The energy of the story is unmistakable.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE is shot in real locale- India, uses local colour, has an all Indian cast, and displays an understanding of local nuances. And it works. Youngsters like Dev Patel, Madhuri Mittal, Freida Pinto stand their ground with veterans like Irrfan Khan and Anil Kapoor (the host of the show). Above all, it is a look at life in the multi-hued country without being judgmental, as happens sometimes with filmmakers from the West.

RAB NE BANA DI JODI First teaser on Sunday.
December 12 will see the release of perhaps the most awaited film of the year, the Aditya Chopra directed Shah Rukh Khan starrer, RAB NE BANA DI JODI (RNBDJ). It will be the first Shah Rukh Khan film (as a lead actor) releasing this year after a gap of almost a year and the audience will get a chance to see their favourite hero (that too in a double role!) after the all time blockbuster, OM SHANTI OM.

The film becomes even more special as it ends an eight year sabbatical for Aditya Chopra, director of the trendsetting DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE (1995) and the iconic, MOHABBATEIN (2000), both starring Shah Rukh Khan.

The initial plans of unleashing the first promo of RNBDJ with Yash Raj's ROADSIDE ROMEO were aborted for reasons best known to the makers themselves. However the eager fans of King Khan and Aditya Chopra will be happy to know that the coming Sunday (November 2nd) will see the first song promo/teaser being unleashed, on SRK's birthday!

The much anticipated music album of the film is expected to release on the 7th of November. And before we leave, here is something interesting. There is a buzz that both SRK and debutant Anushka Sharma have lent their voices to two separate tracks of the audio album.
