It’s common knowledge by now that Himesh will be donning Rishi Kapoor’s hat in Satish Kaushik’s remake of Karzzzz . So it’s obvious that he cannot escape comparisons with Rishi Kapoor who portrayed the character of Monty in Subhash Ghai’s Karz .
Ask Himesh if he’s prepared for these comparisons and he retorts, “What comparisons? There’s no question of comparison. I think if I can even come close to one percent of what Rishi Kapoor had done in the original; it will be like winning half the battle. What Rishi Kapoor had done in Karz is legendary. I don’t think I can live up to those expectations. It’s difficult for me to match Rishi Kapoor’s legendary stature”. Not just that! Himesh has also composed for the remake and again his music will be compared to Laxmikant Pyarelal’s unforgettable tracks. “Whether I can match up to Laxmikant Pyarelal’s music or not, is a million dollar question”, says Himesh. “Success of Karzzzz ’ music depends on my hard work. I have already composed few songs. I won’t be able to give background music for this film as I’ll be acting, singing and will be composing for other films too. I am trying to get Pyarelalji on board as he has done the music for the old Karz . So he will be the right person to give background music for Karzzzz ”. And will he maintain the signature tune of Karz in the remake? “It’s an adaptation so there will be a shade of the original tune somewhere”, confesses Himesh. “It will derive inspiration from the original tune. But it won’t be identical to the old Karz .” Which song from the original is his favourite? “I like all songs but Dard-E-Dil is my favourite”. Will he use any other male singer for the film? “No”, exclaims Himesh firmly. “I have sung all the songs because I don’t think any other singer’s voice will suit me. I think I am the only nasal singer in Bollywood.” Himesh is pretty confident about his director Satish Kaushik who is adapting Karz along with renowned script writer Siraj Ahmed. “The story will be different from the original in terms of time. But since it’s a remake the screenplay will be almost the same. The film will have a modern and fresh look“, explains Himesh. Remakes need to be more interesting and catchy in terms of script, screenplay and music as compared to the original movie. What does Himesh think? “There were two remakes made earlier – Devdas and Sholay . But god only knows how Karzzzz will turn out. However I always thought that Karz would be the right film to be remade”. But then Himesh enjoys a special fan-following. Doesn’t that comfort him and make things easier? “I know the fact that I can’t always cash on my fans and popularity. I’ll have to prove myself in field of acting too. I am a music director by nature. Music is in my blood. But now that I have become an actor, I have to prepare myself for films. I am working hard towards everything from acting, dancing to getting that perfect look. I want to win critic’s remarks too. Last time I managed to get good response but this time I doubt. This is a hardcore commercial film”, concludes the composer with a clear conscience.

The year 2008 could well be actor Arshad Warsi's year. He has signed plum films with filmmakers like Anil Kapoor and Rohit Shetty and has just inked a deal with Rakesh Roshan in which he plays a mad man.

"For the first time I get to play this completely deranged character - a full-on mad man. I've never played a character like this. Why just me? I don't think such a character has been done before," Arshad told IANS.

This would be Rakesh's first film without his son Hrithik in the last seven years.

"In fact, Rakeshji has been with this script for more than 10 years," Arshad says.

Too busy and committed to Ashutosh Gowariker's Jodhaa-Akbar and his father's next superhero film, Hrithik has given this assignment the go-by. It's being directed by Rakesh Roshan's assistant Raja Sen.

This is Roshan's first confident move forward in expanding and corporatising his production house into a multi-filmmaking concern like Yash Raj Films. He intends to concentrate on the projects that would star his son Hrithik and hire other directors for other ventures.

Karan Johar also plans to direct one film a year for his own production house and open it to directors from outside.

Actor Kunal who shot to fame throughout the country with his debut film ‘Kadhlar Dinam’ directed by Kathir passes away. He was found dead early this morning at his flat in Andheri, Mumbai.

The desolate actor committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan in the wee hours of Thursday (February 7). Our sources say that the actor was undergoing a spell of depression for the last few days, though the reason for the same is unknown.

Kunal’s friend, Laveena, was reportedly present when the incident took place. She however, claimed not to have witnessed anything as she had gone to the bathroom. His wife Anu was not present at the spot, as she was visiting her parents in Ahmednagar.

Kunal, who is basically a north Indian has done about a dozen films in Tamil. It is ironic that most of the titles of his films had romantic names like ‘Varsham Ellam Vasantham’, ‘Unnarchigal’ and ‘Paarvai Onre Pothumey’. Kunal’s last film was ‘Nanbanin Kathali’.

It is sheer coincidence that the heroine of the film ‘Paarvai Onre Pothumey’ Monal too had committed suicide.

Kunal will be remembered for the A.R. Rahman music of his debut film ‘Kathalar Dhinam’. The melancholic Rojaa, Rojaa… and the melodious Daandiya Aatumadam… picturised on Kunal and the strikingly beautiful Sonali Bendre will hardly be forgotten by the people of Tamil Nadu.

The actor is survived by his wife, two children, and his father who is a colonel with the Army.

On this sad day our hearts go out to the bereaved family.

Yes Karan Johar at the moment is elated. The reason… he has decided to name his new production starring Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham and Priyanka Chopra after a hit film of his father from 1980 after his father’s film ‘Dostana’. The director is very nostalgic about this development. The film directed by his assistant Tarun Mansukhani is set in Miami, the shoot for which starts this summer.

Karan who was, till some time back, stuck to the title of his films beginning with the letter ‘K’ has let go that rule for sure now, and is very thrilled about this title. This is what he had to say regarding the naming: "For a long time we had no title for Tarun Mansukhani's brilliant script. It is funny, sassy, hilarious…and it's about the friendship between these two guys played by Abhishek and John. So, I don't know why it took us so long to hit on the right title. ‘Dostana’, it is. I was waiting for Tarun to return from the location before firming in on the title."

Karan gets nostalgic about the title. "You know when my father produced ‘Dostana’ in 1980 he was going through hard times. But all the three principal actors Amit Uncle (Bachchan), Shatrughan Sinhaji and Zeenat Aman co-operated to the fullest. That's how the film was made."

So can we expect this new ‘Dostana’ be a love triangle like the old one? "Ha! Well, yes and no. Though it's a love story there's a never-before twist in the tale. All I can say on-record is that we've never had a love triangle like this before. And you'll never see Abhishek and John playing something like this again," promises Karan.

He's also relieved that there was no title hassle. "For ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’ I had to ask Aroona Irani aunty. She sweetly gave me the title in exchange for a pappi (kiss). For ‘Dostana’, I had to kiss nobody, except my father's memory" says a relieved Karan.

Besides the Overseas territory, the satellite rights of successful films have been fetching a hefty amount for producers/right holders. Sometime back, there was talk that the satellite rights of WELCOME had been sold by Studio 18 for Rs. 20 crores. Of course, it was a blatant lie since Studio 18 hadn't even decided on a price for the blockbuster hit.

“We haven't opened the pricing yet. Nor have we discussed with any channel so far,” Priti Shahani, Senior Vice President, Indian Films informs me. In fact, Shahani and her core team have decided to air the film on various channels, instead of assigning the rights to one channel for a contracted sum and period.

“We started the practice with JAB WE MET, which was premiered on Zee and will be aired on 9X, Sony and Bindaas. The strategy is to go for limited telecasts on multiple channels, but retain the rights ourselves. We'll be adopting a similar strategy for WELCOME,” Priti adds. The corporates are doing the business their way and doing it successfully too!

Subhash Ghai launched KARZ and also founded Mukta Arts on 24th October, 1978. Thirty years later, on 24th October this year, the Showman will showcase his new film YUVRAAJ to the global audience. “Yes, I've decided to release YUVRAAJ on this date. It's my most ambitious venture so far,” Ghai beams proudly.

Before YUVRAAJ, Ghai is bringing in a “comparative smaller project” -- BLACK & WHITE. The promos of the film have created tremendous buzz already. “It's completely different from what I've attempted so far. Generally, people look forward to larger than life characters, great music, opulent sets and non-stop entertainment from Scene A to Z in a Subhash Ghai film. BLACK & WHITE is unlike what Mukta Arts has churned out so far,” he states.

Meanwhile, Ghai has decided to move on to yet another biggie, the day YUVRAAJ releases. Reportedly, he has signed his favorite, veteran Dilip Kumar, to head the cast of the film. Also roped in are Vinod Khanna, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone for pivotal roles. “I haven't signed anyone yet. In fact, I haven't locked any script so far,” he corrects me.

So how did the news originate? There has to be some truth to it. “While discussing story ideas with your team of writers, you tend to discuss names that would suit the roles if you were to make that film. These internal discussions keep happening from time to time, but the moment the media gets a whiff of it, it's out in the open, even though nothing is approved. The sad part is, no one bothers to clarify before doing these news-breaks. Frankly, I am in the midst of BLACK & WHITE and YUVRAAJ currently and it leaves me with very little time of think of anything else,” he clarifies.

Shaad Ali showed promise as a director when he made his debut with Saathiya in 2002. Bunty Aur Babli seemed to establish that fact but his last film, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom sank at the box office.

Lets hope Tevar shows off his talent again.
