1. Ghajini

A still from Ghajini

Aamir Khan's action film Ghajini has already raked in a lot of moolah this year, even though it was 2008's last release. Khan went all out to market the film, which was a remake of the 2005 Tamil blockubuster of the same name.

Ghajini broke all records in the very first week.

So would that make Aamir the king of the 2008 box office? The actor himself made an interesting reply on a news channel. "Does Lata Mangeshkar ever say that she is number one? Or for that matter, does Sachin Tendulkar say he is the number one batsman? So why should I say that? The only people who say they are number one are in real, not number one!" Well said, Aamir!

2. Singh is Kinng

A still from Singh is Kinng

Akshay Kumar's success streak continued this year, as he gave the industry a blockbuster in Singh Is Kinng.

Within two weeks, the film managed to gross more than Rs 100 crore in India and abroad. The title even became the slogan for Congress party, after they survived the no-confidence motion. They plastered 'Singh is Kinng' in their publicity campaigns, referring to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Pritam's music was outstanding, and enhanced the film further.

People also loved Katrina Kaif's fantastic pairing with Akki.

3. Dostana

A still from Dostana

Either you loved Dostana or you hated you. Luckily for producer Karan Johar, there were more people in the first category.

Starring Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham and Priyanka Chopra, the film gave all three actors that much-needed hit.

The music by Vishal-Shekhar became a big hit too, and helped to make the film the third biggest hit of the year.

4. Golmaal Returns

A still from Golmaal Returns

Critics may have panned the film but audiences loved it.

Diwali release Golmaal Returns went on to become a big hit, thanks to good word of mouth. Its first part Golmaal (2006) was also a big hit.

Director Rohit Shetty made the audiences roll with laughter, and Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade and Kareena Kapoor gave able support.

5. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

A still from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

If it were not for the terror attacks in Mumbai on 26/11, the success of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi may have been greater.

When the film released on December 12, it was still too soon for people to shake off their fears and watch films in theatres.

The first casualties of the terror attacks in the entertainment business were Sorry Bhai and Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! released on November 28. Both bombed at the box office.

But people could not stay away from Rab Ne for too long. Shah Rukh Khan, and the curiosity whether the film's director Aditya Chopra could repeat his Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge magic seemed to act as magnets.

6. Jodhaa-Akbar

A still from Jodhaa-Akbar

They rocked the big screen in 2006 with Dhoom 2, and came back in a totally different avatar in Jodha-Akbar this year. Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan made a regal pair as Mughal Emperor Akbar and his Rajput Princess Jodhaa.

A few days before the film's release, historians objected to the film, as they said it was inaccurate. They even asked for a ban on the film. There were incidents of violence in some parts of the country due to which the business was affected.

Luckily, the overseas business and word of mouth publicity picked up, and it went on to become a big hit.

7. Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na

A still from Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na

Jaane Tu is one of the biggest hits of the year. And to think, it almost never got made!

The film's original producer Jhammu Sugandh did not have money to complete the film, and there were no other takers. Debutant director Abbas Tyrewala felt his dream would not come true and almost gave up hope.

That's when Aamir Khan entered his life like a saviour.

The star supported the film, and staunchly supported his nephew and film's leading man Imran. The rest, as they say, is history.

Jaane Tu struck a cord with the young audiences, and shot Imran and Genelia D'Souza to stardom.

8. Jannat

A still from Jannat
Emraan Hashmi had a terrible 2007 with a series of flops like The Train, Good Boy, Bad Boy and Awarapan. But he bounced back with Jannat this year.

Directed by debutant Kunal Shivdasani, the film was loosely based on the mysterious murder cricket coach Bob Woolmer. Emraan played the role of a bookie, who meets with a tragic end. Newcomer Sonal Chauhan played his girlfriend.

The low budget film with some great music won the hearts of audiences.

9. Rock On!!

Farhan Akhtar made his acting and singing debut in the brilliant Rock On!!. The rest of the cast, especially Arjun Rampal and Shahana Goswami, put in great performances too.

The film did well, thanks to its terrific music and well-told story.

Farhan seems to be very encouraged by the favourable response to his acting debut. We will see him on screen once again in his sister Zoya's directorial debut, Luck By Chance.

10. Rock On!!

No one could have guessed that A Wednesday would become one of the biggest hits of the year. Directed by first-timer Neeraj Pandey, the film took a while before it hit the theatres. Lead actors Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher's brilliant performance struck a chord with the audience in a big way.

A lot of expected out of Kidnap. It was directed by Sanjay Gadhvi, who made the blockbuster Dhoom series.

It starred Imran Khan, the latest star on the block, fresh from his debut hit film Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na. The other star was Sanjay Dutt, with a fan base already in place.

But the film simply could not take advantage for all that what was going for it. Imran didn't play kidnapper properly, Minisha Lamba looked ridiculous as the fashionable victim, her mother Vidya Malvade looked even more ridiculous with her spilling-over cleavage, and Dutt looked just plain bored.

Himesh Reshammiya could not carry forward his Aap Kaa Surroor success in his second acting film, Karzzzz.

The story had already been a success -- Subhash Ghai had directed the blockbuster Karz, starring Rishi Kapoor, Tina Munim and Simi Garewal, way back in 1980.

Himesh doled out great music but not a good performance. His leading ladies Urmila Matondkar and Shweta Kumar fared even worse.

A lot of money was put into the special effects to enhance the final product.

But the film -- that released on the same day as the hit Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na -- bombed.

Aah, now this one is a huge film. For a 10 year old who may still be wondering what's the fuss about the coming together of Shah Rukh Khan and Aditya Chopra, a trip to Maratha Mandir, Mumbai, is mandatory to check out Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge which is still running there for 13 uninterrupted years. And for the grown-ups, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi hardly needs an introduction. Of course, the music of any Yash Raj Film is special because regardless the fate of some of their recent films, music continues to be highpoint of the production house, Tashan and Bachna Ae Haseeno being the case in point.

Talking about the music of RNBJD, one looks forward to what composer duo of Salim-Sulaiman and lyricist Jaideep Sahni have come up with, considering this is easily their BIGGEST project ever. Also, they would be expected to fill the shoes of Jatin-Lalit who made the score of DDLJ and Mohabbatein, the two projects directed by Aditya Chopra, ever-so-memorable.

a) So, does the music eventually go on to meet the sky high expectations?
b) Has Aditya Chopra indeed reserved the best songs for his third directorial outing?
c) Will Shah Rukh Khan have yet another blockbuster score a la Om Shanti Om to his credit?
d) Does Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi turn out to be the kind which would be played at least 3-4 years from now, if not a decade?

So how does one sum up the music of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi? Well, it is not bad but then it is primarily situational; the kind that gets enhanced by picturisation and choreography.

The sound of 'santoor' at the very beginning of 'Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai' attracts one's attention right away since you immediately get the feel of a Veer Zaara outing. A simple outing that has an out and out Indian feel to it; 'Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai' starts off well but just doesn't pick up enough, courtesy the choice of singer. Seriously, instead of Roop Kumar Rathod being entrusted with the responsibility of a track which is the flagship number of RNBDJ, if a singer like Udit Narayan or Sonu Niigaam or K.K. would have been the chosen one, the song could well have gone to a different level altogether.

In the end, it turns out to be a more than decent number which certainly could have been much better. Also, it doesn't quite turn out to be the kind which deserves to appear at the very beginning of the album. Female version of the song, a much slower one, comes towards the album's end and has Shreya Ghoshal at the helm. A 100 second piece, it is a slower version and a sad one at that. Purely situational.

A slightly better number comes in the form of 'Haule Haule', a number which carries the flavor of Aaja Nachle soundtrack both in terms of middle-class setting and the overall simplicity of sound design. Rendered by Sukhwinder Singh who is subdued rather than being typically full throated, 'Haule Haule' is a situational track which is already on air and is being noticed for the way the bespectacled Shah Rukh Khan brings in all his experience while comfortably dancing around in his middle class clothing. The number has melody as its driving force.

Would 'Dance Pe Chance' turn out to be that number which would make RNBDJ soundtrack special? This is what one wonders when this track sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and Labh Janjua arrives next. However, to one's disappointment, 'Dance Pe Chance' has an ordinary orchestra and arrangements that pull the song back. Preset keyboard sound seems to be driving this 'dance number' that is mainly a Sunidhi Chauhan track with an element of Punjabi being thrown in, courtesy Labh Janjua.

A song where a plain and simple Shah Rukh Khan seems to be going through dance classes, 'Dance Pe Chance' is a number where Salim-Sulaiman haven't done anything special and just followed the sound they have already brought to the audience in films like Neal N Nikki. A four minute remix version 'Dancing Jodi' marks an end to the album and is marginally better due to all the pep and rhythm thrown in. Also, it includes references to 'Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai' and 'Haule Haule'.

'Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte' is a kind of number which (on screen) could turn out to be good on screen, purely on the basis of how Aditya Chopra gets some fun rolling on the screen. This one is clearly an experiment in the making since it amalgamates numerous lyrics and tunes from the yesteryear and mixes them together to create a 'bhelpuri' of sorts. So whether it is 'Jab Pyaar Kisi Se Hota Hai', 'Pal Bhar Ke Liye Koyi Hamein Pyaar Kar Le' or 'Hum Hai Rahi Pyaar Ke' or 'O Haseena Zulfon Waali' or 'Jai Jai Shiv Shankar' - the number includes them all and many more with Sonu Nigam singing as if he is a part of a concert where he has to pay a homage to all the greats from the past. As a standalone number, 'Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte' just doesn't stand a chance and certainly not the kind which would be solely responsible for the sales of the album.

There were four questions that were raised at the beginning of the review. This is what one has to say after hearing the entire album:

a) The music is decent but not huge enough to befit a project which marks the return of Aditya Chopra as a director
b) Aditya Chopra has been responsible for far better romantic outings, most recently being Bachna Ae Haseeno
c) The music will sell well but touching the numbers of Om Shanti Om would be feasible only if the movie turns out to be an excellent fare with a sustained presence at the box office
d) It seems highly improbable that the songs would remain rooted for years at stretch in the hearts of music buffs who expect nothing but the best from a project as huge and important as RNBDJ.

However, what needs to be remembered is that Aditya Chopra has been one of the pioneers when it comes to song picturisation. How can one forget songs like 'Ho Gaya Hai Tujhko To Pyaar Sajna'/'Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye' [DDLJ] or 'Chalte Chalte'/'Soni Soni' [Mohabbatein] which were not the flagship numbers of the respective films ('Tujhe Dekha' and 'Humko Humi Se Churalo' were) but still turned out to be widely popular. The same can be ultimately expected from RNBJD, if response to just-on-air 'Haule Haule' is any indication.

If the remaining songs too come close to 'Haule Haule' in the way they are picturised, rest assured RNBJD too would do well. Add to it the curiosity around SRK and Aditya Chopra coming together and the album can be expected to take a flying start at the stands.

Film : Ghajini

http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj91/farsad666/ghajini.jpg

Look:

Muscles and more muscles, Aamir’s bulked up torso looks perfectly toned. The razor-cut hairstyle along with the jutting ears give him a sinister feel.

Plus :

Remake of the bumper Tamil hit Ghajini directed by the same guy A.R. Murugadoss.

A.R. Rahman and Aamir Khan have always got it right, from Lagaan to Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na.

It’s one of the last releases this year (December 25), just like Taare Zameen Par was in 2007.

Minus :

New heroine Asin maybe a popular actress down south but no one knows her in the rest of India.

People may find it difficult to understand the concept of anterograde amnesia or short term memory loss which Aamir’s character suffers from.

Aamir hasn’t really clicked as an action star whether it was Baazi or Aatank Hi Aatank

Worst-kept secret : Ghajini is a diluted copy of Christopher Nolan’s groundbreaking thriller Memento.

Watch out for: Nishabd girl Jiah Khan in an important cameo in the film.

Industryspeak: “More than as nephew I am waiting for Ghajini as an Aamir Khan fan. I am sure it’s going to be mindblowing stuff” — Imran Khan

Localspeak: “I want to watch Ghajini simply because it’s an Aamir Khan film. His commitment levels are so high that the probability of producing quality work becomes higher. I am curious to see his growth as an artiste” — Bickram Ghosh

Look:

The crew cut hair along with the thin handlebar moustache gives Akshay a very funny look.

Plus:

Deepika Padukone is the new crown princess of Bollywood and her presence gives the film an edge over the Khan flicks.

The film promises the original khiladi Akshay Kumar with a whole lot of daredevil stunts and action setpieces.

Co-producers Warner Brothers will go big to give the film an international presence.

Minus:

Director Nikhil Advani’s last outing was the three-and-a-half hour sleepathon Salaam-e-Ishq.

A large part of the film has been in the cans because chunks needed to be reshot.

Action and comedy usually don’t mix well.

Worst-kept secret: Deepika has a double role in the film.

Watch out for: Mithun Chakraborty in a very special cameo.

Industryspeak: “Akshay Kumar is the biggest superstar in the country and to do a solo heroine film with him is very special. I am sure Chandni Chowk to China will be very big” — Deepika Padukone

Localspeak: “I want to watch the film because it will reveal the ordeal Akshay had to go through to reach where he is today. Aamir’s muscles haven’t brought about any hormonal change in me and I give two hoots about Shah Rukh’s moustache” — Mir

Film: Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

Look:

Moustache, side-parted hair, thick glasses, loose belt, sneakers. This is a Shah Rukh Khan we have never seen before, a look which even draws comparisons with Amol Palekar.

Plus:

Aditya Chopra’s first film in eight years.

Aditya and SRK created Bollywood history with Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in 2005.

The last Yash Raj-SRK film was the pathbreaking Chak De! India.

Minus:

New heroine, model Anushka Sharma is 24 years younger to Shah Rukh.

Yash Raj Films has had a pretty pedestrian run in the recent past — Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Aaja Nachle, Tashan, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic have all bombed.

Music director duo Salim-Sulaiman haven’t yet delivered a chartbusting romantic soundtrack.

Worst-kept secret : Shah Rukh has a double role in the film.

Watch out for: Kajol in a special appearance.

Industryspeak: “I am really looking forward to see Rab Ne... I think it will be a grand cinematic event to have a Shah Rukh-Adi film again” — Farah Khan

Localspeak: “I am a diehard Shah Rukh Khan fan. Aamir is a great actor and I have loved Akshay’s comedy in the last few films but given a choice it has to be SRK. And when it’s an SRK-Aditya Chopra combo, it has to be Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi” — June

The producers are contemplating having celebrities as well as the general public as contestants. Right now things are at the nascent stage and there is possibility of last minute changes."

When contacted, Akshays manager Lokesh Bali said, "Akshay has given his nod to this second season of the show but I cant reveal the details as yet. Nothing has been decided. Akshay is extremely kicked about the whole thing since Fear Factor is all about daredevilry and Akshay simply loves that. Things will start rolling in a month. Image
WITH Chandni Bar, Page 3, Corporate and Traffic Signal behind him, director Madhur Bhandarkar has developed a trademark style of film making which has the word `realistic' incessantly tagged on to it, by both the viewers and the industrywallahs. Well, Bhandarkar's oeuvre may not exactly fall into the classic cinema verite cult, nevertheless, it does try to bridge the gap between art house cinema and mainstream masala with its declaration: Are you ready for the bitter truth? Yup.

Each time the filmmaker picks up a subject, he proposes to do an expose on a particular segment of society. And each time, there is a dogged attempt to reveal the underbelly: ugly, festering and foul. Fashion too falls prey to this inbuilt bias of the director's creative vision and introduces a degree of predictability in the plot. The first half of the film is a relentless replay of all the cliches one would associate with the world of glamour. Small town girls need to shed their middle class morality before they can scale the ladder of success.

Successful models are sad, lonely, broken people, addicted to drugs, alcohol, cigarettes. Godfathers are cruel, manipulative, exploitative. And last but not least, Brokeback Mountain isn't just a film for male fashion designers; it's a lifestyle statement for most of them.

Mercifully, Fashion isn't about cliches alone and manages to transcend them with it's moving tale of three women who try to maintain their honour, dignity, identity in a cruel world that spills over with grime behind the glamour. The film not only takes you behind the psychedelic ramp, it travels through the dark inner recesses of the three lead characters, laying bare their strengths and weaknesses; their fears and hopes; their dreams and nightmares.

If Meghna Mathur's (Priyanka Chopra) journey from Chandigarh to Mumbai is a tortuous coming-of-age sojourn for a small town girl who dreams to become a super model, then reigning diva, Shonali Gujral (Kangana Ranaut) travels through her own personal inferno, ending up totally singed when the arc lights fade. Between them is Janet Sequeira (Mughda Godse), the high on EQ model who chose to make her own compromises by giving up her career and settling down in a faux marriage with her gay designer friend, Samir Soni. Three distinct women who make a choice between success and failure, sanity and insanity, life and loneliness...and create a sensitive parable on bonding and empowerment.

Dramatically, it's Priyanka's journey that is the most comprehensive as it tackles her growth from an ambitious, young girl to an arrogant model who fails to handle her success, crumbles and then rises again, like the proverbial Phoenix. The actress delivers a competent performance and yet, has tough competition from the other two girls.

Debutante Mughda pitches in a confident portrayal of the sweet and sensitive buddy. But the show stopper (read scene stealer) is crazy, kinky, Kangana who does an exquisite metamorphosis from a wispy, high-strung, nervous child-woman to a stunning ramp diva. Watch her handle her wardrobe malfunction, make faces at her nagging manager or exchange bitter workplace truths with rival Priyanka in the ladies' washroom and you'll realise she's perfected the Girl Interrupted act after similar roles in Woh Lamhe, Life in a Metro and Gangster . The men? No place for them, specially since the women completely overshadow them.

Of course, the film desperately needs some tight editing to cut out the flab. Nevertheless, go, witness woman power, in all its agony and ecstasy.

http://movies.indiatimes.com/photo.cms?msid=2655600
DUMB seems to be getting dumber. Funny is beginning to feel unfunny. And Bollywood's current tryst with comedy isn't quite `Welcome' anymore.

Of course, the first Golmaal itself wasn't a high IQ exercise, with its tale of overgrown college students ending up in a blind couple's house. But there were some robust moments of sheer fun along with some crackling chemistry between the foursome: Ajay, Arshad, Sharman, Tusshar.

Here, talented Sharman Joshi has been replaced by also-talented Shreyas Talpade and Kareena Kapoor, basking in the success of Jab We Met , has been added to enhance the star value of the film. Ironically, the silicone shots don't seem work, as the film keeps sagging to unlimited depths, thanks to a no-brainer script and some really bad acting.

First the script. Ajay Devgan has an extended family which includes his couch potato wife, Kareena, his bimbette sister, Amrita Arora and his dumb brother-in-law, Tusshar Kapoor. Wife Kareena is an inveterate serial watcher and draws all her life's mantras from the Kyunki-Kahani soaps of Ekta Kapoor. Naturally, she suspects her husband when he spends a whole night on a yatch away from her. The husband, who had tried to save a desperate girl, ends up spinning an implausible yarn to save his skin.

The rest is one miserable rigmarole, where Tusshar and Shreyas try to infuse some madcap moments in the tedium, while the rest of the people just keep screaming and running.

It's quite sad to watch seasoned actors like Ajay Devgan and Arshad Warsi goof up in comic roles that they managed to carry off with elan in the earlier film. Shreyas, once again, displays his sense of comic timing, visible in Dor , while Tusshar proves that his dumb act in both the films might just end up as his career best.

The girlie brigade is completely unwatchable, especially Kareena who seems to be sleepwalking through the film. Again, sad, since she's such a fine actress and had managed to become the nation's fav girl after Jab We Met .

Ready for a third sequel? Not if it's as brain dead as the second.
